I loved the way that the intertwining aspects of the book came together - the rise and the end of The Maccabees, England men’s cricket team winning the World Cup, and the more personal aspects of White’s life. Felix meets them at each signposted moment to find out what was really behind those moments that gave cricket fans everywhere sporting memories that would last forever, sending the book into an exploration of grief, transgenerational displacement and how the people we've known and things we've loved culminate and take expression in our lives. After more than fifty years out of print, Talking to Women is still as sparkling, honest, profound, funny and wise as when it was first published. I felt a real connection to Felix whilst reading this book as the beautiful fusion of both music and cricket is embedded within the grief of his mother.

Felix White's beautifully, elegantly and passionately written book reminds me why I love cricket so much. By turns wry, explicit and profound, Bunnyman reveals what it was really like to be part of one of the most important British bands of the 1980s. The way it was written made me smile, I found myself reading sentences again just to let the words sink in. However, as someone around the same age - I was born a few months after Felix, who grew up attempting to bowl lovely loopy stuff, watching (and falling in love with) the England cricket test team toiling away in the 90s, who also supports the same county side (Surrey), and also developed similar musical tastes from Oasis, through to the Strokes, Interpol etc, growing up and maturing, *and* then was at university during the rise of the Maccabees (still a live gig highlight) and that musical era, I felt often very closely twinned with the very relatable accounts of these shared experiences. I laughed and cried and like Felix cricket has been a part of my life (for over fifty years) Cricket is so often a metaphor for life and can be a tremendous force for good (check out cricketwithoutboundarie.

And, through the prism of her extraordinary experiences, she offers vital insights into the nature of race, class, feminism, sexuality and ageing in modern Britain.

For example, the lessons about life you can take from Alan Wells and the other snippet interviews with Tuffers, Trott etc are intertwined nicely into the book. This is a moving and funny account about the highs and lows of growing up, slowly replacing an ambition to be a left arm spinner in his school team with the dazzling realities of being a guitarist in world renowned band. In many ways, the book and Felix's commentary on The Maccabees' development, maturation and eventual break-up, allowed me to explore my own grief of a band that I grew up with and have never been able to replace. I admit to having to stop reading a couple of times towards the end as I didn’t want to cry on the train I was on! He lives in South London where he continues to work on numerous musical projects, including film scores, and has still not overcome his rational fear of a cricket ball. The final crow barred reference of England's World Cup triumph as some sort of personal victory for the author is laugh out loud funny (in the bad way) and narcissistic in equal measure.
