After The Blade Artist, readers were left hanging with how Frank Begbie and Mark Renton react to each other on a flight from Edinburgh back to Los Angeles.

The evolution of Renton and Sick Boy's characters follows on from the previous installments in a believable and relatable way. Having decapitated the Edinburgh underworld in The Blade Runner, he has forgotten that others will step forward to fill that crime vacuum. The story left off at the end of Porno, whith Begbie trying to kill Renton, and Renton scamming Sick Boy out of a lot of money. Covering Brexit, the day the Hibs won the Scottish Cup and the dreary Christmas before it, the narrative weaves in and out of Edinburgh - and, weirdly enough, I cannot but not feel connected to it. This is one of the great strengths of the novels in this series with picaresque characters from the Scottish working class community from Leith pitted against the boring and square outside world. It's like catching up with old pals that you are happy to hear about, their exploits still raise a smile, but that you are very glad not to see anymore.
