Description

Filled with fantasy and topsy-turvy fun, Alice in Wonderland is teeming with spectacular songs and astounding animation in the highest Disney tradition! All in all, a brilliant film to watch: Good plot, Good actors, some outstanding CGI and humour throughout. When a bright, beautiful 19-year old Alice Kingsley accidentally tumbles down a rabbit hole, she is transported into the delightfully fantastical world she encountered as a child. Alice's chase down the rabbit hole leads to her encounters with many odd characters culled from both books, from Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee to the Walrus and the Carpenter to the Cheshire Cat and the Caterpillar.

Jonathan Millers startingly imaginative masterpiece was shot in black and white, and captures the menacing atmosphere of Lewis Carroll s narrative with a dream-like editing schematic, actors dressed not in costumes but in period clothes, and a jarring, seductive, beautiful score by Ravi Shankar. Having had the opportunity to watch ALL the DVD versions of one of absolutely fantastic animated classics from Disney and as a former (now retired) member of Disney Management staff, it is strikingly obvious that the charm and production of how we (of a certain age) remember so fondly the animation, and it is somehow lost that in the newer Disney releases, albeit digitally remastered, with the loss of widescreen vision, the over emphasis of sharp lines, etc. She loves the part where the rabbit runs around stating he is late, loves the moment when Alice eats the carrot from the rabbit, and becomes smaller, loves the dog sweeping away the path, adores the moon which becomes a cheshire cat. I myself am not a fan of Alice and Wonderland but found this a version lovely and not as over the top others. In the hands of Disney’s extraordinary animation artists, Lewis Carroll’s immortal literary classic comes to life like never before! Partly thanks (I suspect) to the grounding the book gave the film, the plot unfolded smoothly throughout, with no sense of artificiality - disbelief was certainly suspended. Alice in Wonderland has to be one of the better known Disney classics, particularly thanks to the updated spin-off starring Johnny Depp, but I think it's criminally underated!
