Maggie and Jeanna are speech-language pathologists who work in the Assistive Technology Department for the Belleville Area Special Services Cooperative (BASSC) in southern Illinois. They are AT/AAC facilitators and provide evaluations, direct therapy, consultations, and trainings with school teams. TELL ME About It: AAC Learning with ‘Not a Box’! TELL ME About The Book

Hvordan modarbejder vi ‘ulighed i fællesskaber’, som i fremtiden - med et øget fokus på relationel velfærd - vel kommer til at have stor betydning for ‘(u)lighed i sundhed’? As your students begin making more comments and becoming more interactive and engaged during shared reading, another great instructional strategy to incorporate is ‘Put the CROWD in the CAR.’ With this, you will be asking various questions (CROWD questions: Completion, Recall, Open-ended, Wh question, Distancing) during the ASK step of CAR. We’re big fans of this strategy as it supports us as communication partners to ask a variety of questions (no yes/no questions here!) during shared reading. Below are some examples of CROWD questions you can ask when reading “Not a Box”: Near the end of the story, the narrator asks bunny, “Are you still standing around in that box?” and bunny yells, “It’s NOT NOT NOT NOT a box!”

Big Nate on a Roll

The fifth book in this new series is “Not a Box” by Antoinette Portis. Such a fun book to read, with its simple text, repeated lines, and engaging illustrations. But the real magic of this story lies in the ways it fosters imagination. A box is just a box – unless it’s not; maybe it’s a race car, a mountain top, or a robot! And where else does the magic come in with this book? With all those great (repeated) core words! Philosophers have also pondered whether we can imagine things that we have not experienced ourselves. If we have not experienced them, then how do we know about them? Related to this idea, philosophers have often deliberated over whether or not we can imagine things that do not exist in reality already, which leads us to think about how new inventions come about. Some philosophers argue that those new things which are invented actually do exist in reality since they are usually made up of components that already exist. Can you imagine things that don’t already exist in reality? How do we invent new things then, like computers, TV, etc? Når vi taler sundhed og bæredygtighed, så handler det om at tage udgangspunkt i mennesket. Hvordan har du det? Hvordan er din #livskvalitet? Og så handler det om at gøre en forskel.” And as in Johnson's classic, the spare, streamlined design and the visual messages about imagination's power will easily draw young children, who will recognize their own flights of fantasy.”

Having just returned from Bratislava (ITAPA), where we've been collaborating with key stakeholders (researchers, startups, government officials, healthcare experts, businesses and management) across sectors on upcoming years' reform investments. In the healthcare domain, the focus largely revolves around digital transformation, particularly gearing up for what it will mean and require from institutions and infrastructure. Slovakia grapples with many of the same socio-economic components familiar to Denmark, yet the disparity between rural and urban areas is distinctly pronounced. This underscores that technology isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. Such a transition is significant and demands long-term strategies with broad ownership. During our visit, we provided recommendations on methods and tools that can be utilized for successful strategic mobilization efforts. It was a delightful day, where I believe we learned at least as much as the participants did. We look forward to continuing the dialogue and collaboration What else do we imagine that create worlds that are not real (fictional)? Like when people play games, daydream, dream, or creating art? Life really can be that simple. This book will make you smile and hopefully reignite some of that wonder in the adult mind.

Original questions and guidelines for philosophical discussion by Caitlin Granahan. Edited June 2020 by The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics. Do you ever use objects and pretend they are something different? Do you still know what they are in real life even though you are pretending it is something different? The nature of the imagination is something that philosophers have been debating about for years, raising questions about how it works and how we are able to distinguish between pretend and real-life. Do we imagine consciously or unconsciously? How do we know when we are imagining? Imagination also affects how we view and react to things such as art, films, and theater. We interpret each of these things through our imagination, and our interpretations are often different from one another. This is something that the kids should be prompted to explore.
