About this deal

The appeal is very much that of [ Goodnight Stories for] Rebel Girls or Frances Lincoln's Little People, Big Dreams series, but this is the only such collection to focus exclusively on black women. I've been on a quest to find books that aren't entirely full of white heterosexual middle class imagery. It’s excellent that children can get an introduction to lesser-known African American women such as abolitionist Mary Prince and sculptor Augusta Savage, alongside the better-known Rosa Parks and Sojourner Truth. It harkens back to classic children's illustrations done by Mary Blair or Mr Happy by Roger Hargreaves.

She then went on to receive her MFA in Film and Video from CalArts where she snuck into Animation classes to learn from Disney and Dreamworks legends. Sometimes non-fiction is also a fantastic way to tempt a reluctant reader into sitting down with a book. Among these biographies, readers will find aviators and artists, politicians and pop stars, athletes and activists.Dieses Buch erzählt jeweils auf einer Seite von berühmten schwarzen* Frauen und was sie in ihrem Leben gemacht haben. After a brief stint in television as a production coordinator, she is now a freelance graphic designer and a picture-book illustrator. One Black History Month, Vashti Harrison illustrated one African American woman from history every day and posted the portraits online along with a small biography. It wonderful to remind kids of what potential is in them and to see what others have already achieved. Vashti Harrison’s beloved illustrations of historical figures — scientists, activists, artists, and more — are the perfect gift for today’s young leaders.

New York Times bestselling author-illustrator Vashti Harrison shines a bold, joyous light on black men through history. The charming, information-filled full-color spreads show the Leaders as both accessible and aspirational so reader knows they, too, can grow up to do something amazing. Not just for girls, this is an inspiring book for any child as it shows how a determined nature, ambition and hard work can make important change in the world.Perfect for enquiring young minds, these engaging non-fiction books approach subjects from biography to nature and science to history in a variety of interesting ways. This fascinating non-fiction picture book explores the life of an inspirational woman who overcame race and gender barriers to become an internationally acclaimed scientist.
