There are also a number of specials: Romanians, Sharpshooters, Partisans and the Night Witch adding variety to later scenarios. The casualty system is also brilliant and heartbreaking. I had a real connection with a rifleman and a machine gunner who were stars of my platoon. When I lost the rifleman after pushing too hard, and then drawing them after the mission when they were, sadly, in the casualty pile, I immediately regretted the decision to rush. Connection to specific characters began to occur over time. And the unique artwork by Roland MacDonald only added to the buy-in. There’s a lot more to learn about within, but I don’t want to spoil this campaign. There are many actions to discover, new units to explore, and the campaign continually introduces new elements for you to learn. This campaign also allows players to reset it once finished, as it is not a legacy game. This allows for unlimited plays through the campaign and exploration of its many branching narratives and endings. Riflemen A out here trying to hold down mission points while tanks slowly approach. Game Experience: Lead your stalwart troops to victory in this epic two-player campaign, played out in the war's most infamous city. Final Score: 4.5 stars – Achtung! Gather courage and enter the arena of brutal combat and top-notch gameplay.

Each commander notes the victor in their own Scenario book. They may also have to log on the small map picture that one side has control of a key area. Then note the next scenario and their briefing paragraph to set the scene. The numbers are the same for both but the text is specific to them. Undaunted: Stalingrad is a masterwork. With its peak production values, well-crafted storylines, historically accurate artwork, efficient storage solutions and clever combat system it presents a perfect blend of form and substance to represent this epic battle. Stalingrad was the bloodiest battle of the entire Second World War. The Undaunted system gives you an easy-to-grasp-and-play system that gives you the chance to get the feel of the events that unfolded in the Autumn/Winter of 1942/3 without getting bogged down in horrendous detail. If you’ve tried Undaunted games before and have not been keen, this one might just change your mind. On the other hand, if you already are an Undaunted fan then entrench yourself on the banks of the Volga in Undaunted: Stalingrad. This is also a very easy campaign to navigate. Everything is laid out nicely and steps both before and after a mission are easy to complete. The only daunting moment is adding all the tokens to the board as shown by the map book. But with players each focusing on their own side, it doesn’t take very long. The rulebook lays out combat and new tokens nicely, and each action is easy to refer to if you find you need to relearn anything.

Despite that spasm, all of this provides a tremendous tension that simply doesn’t exist in standard Undaunted. It’s a driving force behind the extended experience and partially responsible for the game’s brilliance. Thompson and Benjamin offer a release valve, however, by allowing you to retreat. Instead of taking your turn, you can call it quits and immediately capitulate. You lose, but you stop the bleeding. This completely changes the dynamic of play. It forces you to consider the permanence of unit loss and attaches an emotional connection to the lives of these men and women. Undaunted: Stalingrad is a monumental standalone game that expands the series’ scope and challenge beyond anything that’s come before. Through its branching campaign, you’ll discover more of the hundreds of cards and tiles every time you play. Featuring more than 430 unique illustrations by Roland MacDonald and 150 evocative mission briefings written by acclaimed author Robbie MacNiven, immerse yourself in this campaign at the heart of the war. The 3 commanders on each side: 2 Squad Leaders and the overall Platoon Sergeant, are not physically represented on the battlefield and are immune from effects, both good and bad, except via the text in the RPG inspired scenario briefings.

Prima o poi... Stalingrad’s campaign can span fifteen games. Over the course of this campaign, players try to meet objectives, and upon completion of a mission, read a briefing from their scenario book before moving on. Each mission setup may introduce new faction units as well as new rules and conditions. It also begins to make each faction more defined and asymmetric.Undaunted: Stalingrad gives you the chance to recreate this epic struggle. Can you succeed and change the course of history? Senior Games Developer Filip Hartelius added, “Undaunted: Stalingrad takes the series to its breathtaking next level. With every scenario played, your actions impact the course of the campaign, the platoon of soldiers you lead, and the very city itself. Brought to life by Roland MacDonald’s beautiful illustrations and Robbie MacNiven’s evocative writing, Undaunted: Stalingrad immerses you in this infamous battleground like never before. This is something else.”

January 19, 2022 – The 4th Undaunted Series Board Game will be Stalingrad. In Fall 2022, Osprey Games will publish Undaunted: Stalingrad from the award-winning David Thompson and Trevor Benjamin. With a thrilling campaign of branching narratives, the latest game in the Undaunted series will contain more content than ever before. I’ve read that Stalingrad changes a couple of mechanisms from earlier games in the series. The routing of units felt natural to me and made me constantly mindful of my unit numbers. The rules to how units spawn to the board is also updated in this iteration of Undaunted. Rather than set locations, units enter the board based on rifleman locations. Riflemen become important as they are also the unit that can control mission points and push to victory in several mission types. The battle for Stalingrad features conflict over key positions as battles shift all over the city.Yeah, the tiles are dark and moody. It can be difficult to visually identify key places of interest as everything is brown and gray. But precious buildings are shelled and defaced over the course of the campaign. They actually degrade mechanically as cover is whittled away and tiles swapped for ones that display the scars. The first time I demolished a building and then later found myself having to defend the smoking rubble – I was battered. Le regole sono praticamente le stesse di Undaunted Normandy, che fa da base a tutti i titoli successivi. Per cui potete leggerne il riassunto lì. It’s here where the quality of the scene-setting briefings by Robbie MacNiven prove their worth as you get drawn into the lives of Max and Uri and their squads as their struggle evolves. The early missions introduce new units and actions and I found myself pushing on to see what comes next. After a couple of successful scenarios for the Germans, the Soviets brought up artillery that absolutely obliterated both Pavlov’s house and Zabolotny’s House, the two so-called “lighthouses”, reducing them to piles of rubble yet still the Germans clung on. So then the German Engineers arrive to attempt the destruction of the NKVD HQ in the Waterworks and on it goes until a final climactic battle that decides their fate and that of Stalingrad itself. To The Last Man And Bullet The growl of the bombers passing overhead echoed up and down the street, vibrating through Max Schroder’s body. He stared up at them, a phalanx of cruciform shapes crossing the leaden vault overhead, heading east towards the Volga.” An Unexpected Legacy

With Undaunted: Stalingrad, the designers have moved the action to Eastern Front, but this isn’t just a reskin. It’s a whole new game with a novel, dedicated campaign system. What’s in the Box una gestione del mazzo intelligente, per cui è il giocatore a decidere cosa rischiare e cosa no, dove intensificare gli sforzi e dove no, quale strategia spingere e quale tralasciare; il sistema è "adattivo", nel senso che si può sempre rispondere alle mosse avversarie modificando la propria condotta; Game designers David Thompson & Trevor Benjamin said, “We’re very excited about the release of Undaunted: Stalingrad. We’re digging deep into the storied Battle of Stalingrad, a key battle not only for the Eastern Front but the entire Second World War, and we’re doing it with a massive box full of content unlike anything Undaunted fans have seen before. We’re introducing new units, actions, and ways to interact with the environment. What we’re most excited about though, is that we’ve created an integrated campaign, where the results of each scenario impact the rest of the campaign’s rich narrative and will set the stage for scenarios to come.”These soldiers are grouped by class into a combat unit that takes actions on the tiles of the playing area. Thus the 5 Riflemen are represented by the Rifleman combat counter. There are 3 soldiers in the Machine Gunners unit and the Scouts. When support units arrive such as Snipers and Engineers they will also have 3 members. These units are grouped into two identical squads: A and B. These are the same for both the Germans and the Soviets. (This seems to be more for play balance than historical accuracy). Each of the 2 players has separate RPG style scenario booklets which give briefings on the battle before them dependent on the outcome of the previous battles. These develop over the course of 15 branching scenarios I forfeited one scenario five minutes in. It was a decisive moment and the affective connection between myself and the game was absolute.
