This box set of three full-color paperback bound books is an engaging time capsule capturing the thoughts and artwork Chuck D created from the start of COVID-19 through the first year of the Biden administration.

Writing alongside his sketches, D laments the decline of collectives in hip-hop, recounts recording sessions with Ice Cube et al and reminisces about Prince holding garage sales and, in the studio, ‘tossing tape around like a chef’. The co-founder and front man of legendary hip hop group Public Enemy unleashes his commentary on contemporary events with the activist instinct that made the hip hop pioneers a social message phenomenon.Chuck DIn Livin’ Loud, Public Enemy founder, hip-hop pioneer and revolutionary activist, Chuck D, presents a body of art, each piece reflective of the man behind the music, alongside a biographical commentary tracing his musical and artistic trajectory. He studied graphic design as a college student at Adelphi University in the 1980s before his wildly successful musical career took center stage as Public Enemy became international superstars. He paints a frazzled-looking Trump, a rifle sight hovering by his jawline, and compares him to a haunted house, terrifying but tempting to voters. For Chuck D, who famously stated that rap is “Black America’s CNN,” the mood of the graphic journals are dystopian, filled with foreboding, dark images that exhibit the influence of the expressionism of artists Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. In the last six years, I’ve reverted back into the arts, combining all of these elements in my work, still trying to change the world. Featuring over 250 of his paintings, sketches and drawings, Livin’ Loud includes a commentary of over 13,000 words in which Chuck D traces his musical and artistic trajectory offering unprecedented insight into his life and work.

The approximately chronological Livin’ Loud hits its stride, naturally, when it reaches the goldenage hip-hop era, with quick-draw portraits – from photographs, most likely – of artists ranging from turntablist pioneer DJ Kool Herc to a brattish and slumped Beastie Boys and, of course, Public Enemy themselves: Chuck’s longtime compatriot/foil Flavor Flav, who’s been somewhat off. With a foreword by Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello and featuring over 250 of Chuck D's paintings, sketches and drawings, Livin' Loud includes a commentary of over 13,000 words in which he offers unprecedented insight into his life and work. Public Enemy’s lyrics were born of the violence of prejudice in America, turbulent anthems such as Fight the Power and Don’t Believe the Hype captured the zeitgeist and planted political hip-hop into the heart of American culture.

StewDio: The Naphic Grovel ARTrilogy of Chuck D recreates format of his original art, combining three full-color paperback bound books into a beautiful box set. A multi-platinum recording artist, recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, an educator, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, activist and celebrated visual artist, co-founder of the supergroup Prophets of Rage, Chuck D’s credentials are arguably the most impressive in hip-hop.In the last six years, I've reverted back into the arts, combining all of these elements in my work, still trying to change the world. During the heyday of Public Enemy, he was the frontman who didn’t drink or take drugs (he was always the designated driver), something he attributes to “ the pressure of holding your crew and your whole thing together”.

He goes on to share his journey into the world of hip-hop, a genre that he helped to curate, cut through and form.
