Black levels are nice and inky giving the image a notable sense of depth and dimension at all times.

This does not happen to all of the colors, meaning that the contrast dial wasn't turned in every scene, but it is very noticeable when flairs are used in the film. Instead, it builds upon the first film, enhances what you know, and perfectly fills in some blanks along the way. But for all its many virtues (and believe me, I do think it’s a great movie), Alien is still just folks being hunted by a monster. Audiences clearly weren’t in the mood for such a downbeat and gruesome film in 1982 and critics weren’t enamoured either. Shout’s transfer was good for its time, but now you can see the color grading was too cold and “blue-ish”, and there’s also some filter at work that doesn’t do justice to the movie’s look and details.The bright shots are crisp, but at times darker images appear filtered, as if to give an especially small and claustrophobic enclosed feeling. years later though it’s regarded by many (including me) as one of the greatest horror movies ever made. If you’ve never seen these or heard that great audio commentary before, it’s well worth picking through everything here. What today’s youth has to remember is that we didn’t have the internet, nor did we have torture porn around when The Thing was released.

Ennio Morricone’s evocative and foreboding score employs the entire soundstage and is presented in fine fidelity.It is sourced from the same 4K restoration that Arrow used for its 2017 single-disc Special Edition. It was done by one of the movie's producers, who hated what John Carpenter did to his film, so he tried to "fix" the film for TV. At the mid range there is still a hint of softness, but only a hint, and you can really tell the difference in quality on this presentation between, for example, the long shots of the helicopter in flight (which have more grain and can only provide a certain amount of detailing) and the closer images, both indoors and out.
