He brilliantly also portrayed the way in which Black people (in particular, Black women) are held to impossible standards next to their white counterparts, with Catherine and the Queen Mother's storyline and constant comparisons made between the two being a great example of this. The book explores the relationship between the royal family and the public, racism, and homophobia in British society. Reading this during coronation weekend is probably the best time that I could have chosen for this book. I also wasn't a huge fan of the ending, as it didn't quite feel like enough seeds had been planted to build toward that particular culprit.James’ progression as he grows in understanding whom he should trust within his innermost circle provides tumultuous internal and external conflict that is impossible to turn away from—especially when the potentially lethal impact of racism is succinctly and sadly presented as part of the overwhelming challenges unique to his role. Overall, I enjoyed the general concept but I felt like it could’ve been more exciting, but as a casual read I think it’s a pretty fun one with some good commentary to check out. Jackson’s debut is well-executed and surprises readers with a connective web of interesting characters and motives.

There were times when I thought that events could have happened without that explanation, leaving the reader to infer what the author intends them to mean. When you can't leave your hotel without being mobbed by paparazzi; when you can't be yourself and have to live the life you are instructed to, and when you aren't given the time to grieve, all in the name of building audience excitement for the show, it makes you realise that the glitzy outward appearance hides a much darker side; one that is showcased chillingly in this book. This was great and had me hooked from the first page, I loved the idea of a 'curse' and a long-term mystery.

Ultimately, though, this was a fun queer read exploring double standards and the treatment of people of colour in the public eye, with heaps of family secrets and drama. I pretty much guessed the twist, but as someone who reads a lot of thrillers and mysteries, I'm used to this so I didn't mind it. While I didn’t mind the characters or relationships, I wish they’d gotten more development, especially with this being sold as a romantic thriller. I loved the characters and was rooting for them all the way through; the side of romance was perfect and there were many moments that had me giggling.

His biggest achievement to date is breaking the news that Rihanna can’t wink (she blinks, in case you were wondering).I felt for James, both as a young teenager who’d just lost his dad, and as a new king in a country that didn’t necessarily want him. This is a great story about the realities of Hollywood and how young stars navigate their way through the minefield of showbiz.
