About this deal

I was given a brooch by the United Kingdom Association of Women Judges to mark my retirement from the supreme court.

To my left is the lake with its pelicans and wildfowl and a distant view of Buckingham Palace (last visited for the banquet for President Trump), also the pretty little fake cottage with its traditional cottage garden. One of these, former barrister Afua Hirsch, has turned her into the heroine of a children’s book, Equal to Everything: Judge Brenda and the Supreme Court. But the segregation into those who were expected to have high aspirations and those who were not was indefensible, especially when it varied so much from place to place and between boys and girls. She went to Bolton-on-Swale primary school and then Richmond High School for Girls, but at 13, her father died suddenly. The Government’s counsel, Sir James Eadie QC and Lord Keen QC, displayed their customary skill at dispensing forensic perfume, but even they could not conceal the stench of unconstitutionality coming from 10 Downing Street. Even so, she loves talking about her cases, and many chapters begin in a general autobiographical way, with personal events and reminiscence, only to dive down a rabbit-hole of case law and legislation a few pages in, from which they only emerge towards the end of the chapter.

Spider Woman by Lady Hale review — all rise: the Beyoncé of

Lady Hale herself was just trying to apply those 17th Century checks and balances to a troubled time in the 21st Century. On 27 June 2011, Lady Hale gave a lecture in memory of Sir Henry Hodge, "Equal Access to Justice in the Big Society" in which she explains the benefits of an inquisitorial Tribunal system over adversarial proceedings.Hale was one of six women in her class, which had 110 men, and graduated with a starred first and top of her class in 1966. It is a sad indictment of our society, that when confronted with a highly intelligent, powerful woman, making a very important pronouncement that could have major ramifications for the future of our country – we first notice what she is wearing, then wonder where we could get a brooch like that, then wonder if it had any specific hidden meaning pro/anti Boris (it didn’t! They were also forward-thinking, open-minded, Christian small-c conservatives, but she has no idea how they voted and says I would have to ask her older sister, making it clear from her tone that I must never ask her older sister.

Brenda Hale is a superhero who embodies Parker's law that great power brings equivalent responsibility. He makes the point that the case affected the UK as a whole but also had implications for and required the participation of all the devolved nations. Scorton had had a bomber airfield and we were close to Catterick, and there were quite a few of the people living in Nissen huts who had been bombed out of Teesside,” she says. There’s absolutely no need to scrap it and doing so is almost bound to mean many more cases having to go to the European court of human rights and more cases that the United Kingdom will lose.In 2009, when the Supreme Court was created, she became Deputy President and then, in 2017, the President which gave her, and her brooch, a date with destiny as Boris Johnson tried to send MPs off on holiday as the Brexit departure date was approaching.

She smiled through moments where her gender unnecessarily became the forefront and calmly requested changes to be made. Pleased I read it though - wasn’t familiar with Lady Hale before this and feel she is a true inspiration for other women. I enjoyed the earlier sections about her life growing up, but found the latter sections exploring her career a little harder to remain as involved in as I found the detailed exploration of the law a bit dry at times. It is still much more of a legal biography than the biography of someone who happens to be a lawyer.Weighing up of arguments is something that any law teacher or reformer judge has to do – listening to at least two sides of the story, and trying to work out which comes closest to either the truth or the right answer, depending on whether you’re a trial judge or appellate judge. Other people said she came from an ordinary background, but it should be noted that her family were very well educated with Oxbridge graduates. It looks absurd – why on earth are we not allowed to wear shirts with a collar and tie until the sixth form? In declaring the prorogation void, to remainers, Lady Hale became the epitome of sense, trying to stop an over-mighty Prime Minister silencing pesky Parliamentarians; to leavers, she became the voice of the establishment trying to block Brexit.
