This approach seems best, as you can put plenty on, smooth it over with normal tools before it skins plus it remains plastic over time (supposedly) ? Hands and exposed skin have to be washed immediately using hand wipes such as Sika® Cleaner-350H cleaning towels or a suitable industrial hand cleaner and water. If the paint requires a baking process (> 80 °C), best performance is achieved by allowing the sealant to fully cure first. Sikaflex®-522 can be processed between 5 °C and 40 °C (climate and product) but changes in reactivity and application properties have to be considered.Sikaflex®-522 adheres well to a wide variety of substrates and is suitable for interior and exterior elastic sealing and bonding applications. Sikaflex 522 adhesive is recommened for sealing DIY awning rail installation as it gives a stronger bond to the rail and the flexible seal will not shrink or crack over time. Sikaflex 512 has now been replaced by 522 - the sealant is exactly the same but just an updated version. It’s been sat in a barn for 30 years so is dead dry, but has not had any real maintenance during that time.

Suitable for the sealing and bonding of various applications internally and externally in caravans and motorhomes, including skylights and aerators. Tests with actual substrates and conditions have to be performed ensuring adhesion and material compatibility. If painting process takes place after the sealant has built a skin, adhesion could be improved by treating the joint surface with Sika® Aktivator-100 or Sika® Aktivator-205 prior to paint process.
