If you add going to the gym to an already very active lifestyle, that’s the icing on the cake with a cherry on top. This book would have been better titled “Not a Life Coach - Ramblings of a Privileged Middleclass White Man” I am astonished this book got as far as being published. The basic mechanics of how nutrition affects how fat/skinny/strong we are and the principle that a Calorie (Fucking) Deficit is the only thing that really matters. Not enough women know how our hormones and menstrual cycle influence fat loss and muscle strength, which can lead to a lot of disappointment and frustration. I can, however, imagine this book resonating well with readers who enjoy listening to motivational speakers.

Calorie deficit is how we lose weight, there’s no weight loss ‘secret’, you just need to consume less calories than you burn. Readers will finish Not a Diet Book, equiped with the knowledge they need to not only embrace a healthier and more balanced relationship with food and exercise, but too with the tools for success to excel in all areas of their life. For muscle growth, consume 2-3g protein per kg of your bodyweight and eat as much as you can without getting fat.

I’ve read non of them from start to finish except one book, the Steve Job Biography as I’m a fan boy. Other than that, setting an alarm, electronic wellbeing, audiobooks, podcasts, magnesium and lavender spray can help improve your sleep quality. What is the point in taking the elevator at work to then pull yourself out of bed at 5am to walk on a treadmill for an hour? He obviously doesn't spend too much time on this matter because he is selling his way of influencing people. He cleared this cloud of uncertainty by being brutally honest and street smart, using the science in ways that I have never seen before.

He speaks my language, which, for the record, isn't ENTIRELY f-bombs, because my vocabulary is comprehensive and multifarious (and I obviously have access to Thesaurus. TEF stands for thermic effect of food which is the number of calories burned by processing food for use and storage.

Thanks to James, I can now continue my fitness journey to avoid the dangerous hereditary medical conditions that have wracked my family. However, if someone was to say to me ‘I can go to the gym five times a week at lunchtimes’ then I would say that in addition to the compound exercises, you can have a little fun and spend extra time training your glutes or your calves (if you’re a dude), but it isn’t totally necessary. Meditation and mental health were great chapters but the ones that hit home was mindset and motivation. It's good in that it's all in one place with references, and as he states you can dive in deeper in your own time. You can get a high-quality monohydrate creatine for relatively cheap, especially compared to more expensive supplements that are not half as effective. Unfortunately, he’s not taken his own advice, adding in his own rags to riches story, cliched analogies and a good deal of padding the book could do without. After hating his corporate job, he decided to become a personal trainer because he “saw friends were doing it and was jealous”. AND, it should be telling that it didn't sit on my TBR for a decade before I got around to reading it, either.

The only possible reason why he abruptly kept quoting Einstein about the law of thermodynamics in a self improvement book is the effort to seem smarter even though “he didn’t do school”. But scientific data shows those who keep bread in their diet are more likely to stick to their daily calorie goals. HE is the new bad boy of the health and fitness world who makes no apology for firing off F-words – including referring to people as FAT. James also gives a lot of life advice in the mid-section of this book, and unfortunately this is the reason I can't give 5 stars. This is why I follow him and happily bought a book that rehashed so much of what I already knew, and why I highly recommend his program to all of the people. Having said that, fats should make up about 20 percent of your daily diet for your body to function properly.
