Park adds: "At the end there is that harsh reality of what happens to a snowman, and having taken you through that wonderful relationship that developed, he doesn’t shy away from death and the inevitability of life. The story opens when they first meet, Ethel is a ladies maid and spots Ernest on his bike; he looks up and notices her at the window, and the rest, they say, is history. Ethel by now is already 37 years old and wants a baby and luckily she gets pregnant and has Raymond but the doctors warned Ernest that she can never have another child because she will die while giving birth. I've always thought that the difference between British and American children's literature is that the British never sentimentalize childhood. And as the times are changing, you get to see Ethel and Ernest not liking a different political party in government, men growing long hair, women wearing shorter skirts, and how quickly the world they grew up is changing especially having a women in Parliament.

Other books were translated for stage and radio, with Briggs taking a keen interest in the overall production. The latter could be seen most directly in When the Wind Blows (1982), Briggs’s examination of an elderly couple’s attempts to follow government guidelines as nuclear war breaks out; and The Tin-Pot General and the Old Iron Woman (1984), a thinly disguised General Leopoldo Galtieri and Margaret Thatcher. Her death from leukaemia in 1973, and the deaths of his parents, led Briggs to throw himself into his work. Their first meeting is beautifully described in the wordless opening sequence of the book devoted to their story. I find it interesting how different each decade appears in this book and how easily our opinions changes during our life. Met deze strip sloot ik de cyclus van de vier graphic novels/strips, die autobiografisch of sterk autobiografische elementen bevatten, af: The Snowman, Gentleman Jim, When the Wind Blows en deze.

You get the importance that he attaches to the world he was brought up in, the world of his parents, is a completely different world to the one people live in now. But immediately when he started invading Europe and sending Jews to death camps, they realize that he needs to be stopped or he can conquer and destroy England. What I enjoyed about this was that it was VERY British (which of course connected with me) and that they felt so 'normal'.El ilustrador Raymond Briggs hace un homenaje gráfico a la relación de sus padres y cuenta la historia del matrimonio desde que se conocen hasta el fallecimiento de ambos.

As various narrative texts came his way, he realised that not all of them were of the highest quality, and took to writing himself. For me it was like a dream come true - I was just so hoping it would reflect his original comic book artwork and it did. Ethel y Ernest es sutilmente vertiginoso, como la vida, que pasa con tanta rapidez y sin que te des cuenta. Beginning with Ethel working as a lady's maid and Ernest passing her house as a milkman we see the couple fall in love, marry and begin their lives together.
