Out of all five products that I compared, the CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion was the only one which is fragrance free, non-comedogenic and has the seal of acceptance from the National Eczema Association. Our current one, Ceramide 1, or morerecently called CeramideEOP, was the first one that was identified in 1982 and it's a special snowflake. It contains the essential fatty acid, linoleic acid and has a unique structure. It's believed that ceramide 1 plays a "binding role" in the lipid layers of the extracellular matrix. Along with ceramides 4 and 7, they also play a vital role in epidermal integrity and serve as the main storage areas for linoleic acid (a fatty acid that's alsovery important for barrier repair). CeraVe is a dermatologist-developed cult skincare brand which hails from the US. The CeraVe story began in 2005 after experts noticed that many skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dry skin all had one thing in common: a compromised skin barrier.

Like with ceramides, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our bodies decreases as we get older. As the amount of hyaluronic acid in our skin reduces, the skin is more likely to start sagging or develop wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid also plays an important role in wound repair. A patented delivery technology - Multi-Vesicular Emulsion (MVE) - to slowly release hydration throughout the day, for instant & long-lasting hydrationIf you have normal, dry, or combination skin and you don’t suffer from acne, you may want to try the Aveeno or Vanicream lotions since they contain shea butter which is good at toning and soothing the skin. Personally, I liked the CeraVe lotion better because it has no fragrance, unlike the Aveeno and Vanicream products. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream can be applied as a face cream or body cream to help restore the appearance of hydrated, healthy-looking skin. This makes it a convenient skincare option for anyone who prefers formulas that can be used on multiple areas. I have very dry skin and found that the lotion did a good job of moisturizing my skin and reducing dry patches. Eczema

Applying skincare products that contain ceramides has been proven to help reduce eczema, and protect the skin barrier, reducing dryness, fine lines, wrinkles and dullness. One study from 2008 showed that using skincare products containing ceramides had a significant effect in clearing mild to moderate eczema. I compared the ingredient lists between the two, and noticed that there were slight differences, with the UK version containing additional skin conditioning agents. The ingredients were, however, mostly the same.Aqua / Water / Eau, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetyl Alcohol, Ceteareth-20, Petrolatum , Potassium Phosphate, Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, Carbomer, Dimethicone , Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Cholesterol, Phenoxyethanol, Disodium EDTA, Dipotassium Phosphate, Tocopherol, Phytosphingosine, Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin Now the question is only this: If we put ceramides all over our face do theywork as well as ceramides already naturally in our skin? Well, the answer is probably a no, but they do work to some extent. The BeautyBrains blog made a fantastic article about ceramides and they have listed a couple of examples about studies showing that ceramides - especially when used in certain ratios with cholesterol and fatty acids - do hydrate the skin and can help to repair the skin barrier. These two moisturizing formulas differmainlyin their texture. CeraVeMoisturizing Creamfeatures a rich, yet non-greasy cream texture that makes it ideal for those withnormal todry skin on their face or body. It contains petrolatum, an occlusive ingredient that helps seal inmoistureby creating a physical barrier on the skin’s surface. CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion, on the other hand, is designed with a lightweight, oil-free lotion texture that may be better suited for normal to oily skin on your face or body. It contains beneficial ingredients such as glycerin and dimethicone.

It is also believed that skin conditions such as eczema are as a result of a compromised skin barrier, and fewer ceramides in the skin. Although the CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion is recommended for dry skin, I feel that it could be used by all skin types. For me personally, the CeraVe lotion is the clear winner if you have very dry skin as it’s fragrance free, moisturising, and available at a very affordable price. Therefore, applying CeraVe products which contain 3 essential ceramides directly to the skin can help to protect it's barrier and retain moisture. The skin is left feeling hydrated, moisturised and comfortable all-day long! Key Ingredients In The CeraVe Moisturising Cream:

Recommendation: Before applying the CeraVe Moisturising Cream, cleanse the skin with one of their cleansers depending on your skin type and/or concern. Ok, so now we know what ceramides are, let's see what they do in our skin: research shows clearly that they play a super important role in keeping the skin barrier healthy and the skin hydrated. If ceramides in the skin are decreased, more water can evaporate from the skin and there is less water remaining in the skin. So ceramides form kind of a "water-proof" protecting layerand make sure that our skin remains nice and hydrated. I noticed that in the United Kingdom the CeraVe Moisturising Lotion is recommended for “Dry to Very Dry Skin” whereas in the United States the same product is recommended for “Normal to Dry Skin”. Ceramides make up to 50% of the skin and their role is in supporting the skin's natural barrier and retaining moisture. With factors such as age, pollutants and sun damage, ceramides can begin to lose their effectiveness which eventually weaken's the skin' barrier. Once your skin's barrier has been damaged, it is prone to irritation and sensitivity such as dryness, redness, wrinkles, roughness and visible signs of dehydration. Additionally, skin conditions such as eczema often have lower levels of ceramides in the skin which leads to the common symptoms of dryness and inflammation. Ceramides make up 50% of the outer layer of our skin, and help to form a barrier to protect your skin from the environment. As we age the amount of ceramides in our skin decreases and this can result in drier skin, wrinkles and fine lines.

This 'Timed-Release' formula provides multiple phases of moisturisation to keep our skin hydrated for up to 24 hours. CeraVeMoisturizing Creamis formulated with a number of skin-supporting ingredients, such as our three essential ceramides, hyaluronic acid, petrolatum, and dimethicone. To learn more about the skincare benefits of each of these ingredients, head to Ingredients in CeraVe. This moisturizing formula also contains MVE Delivery Technology, whichencapsulates ceramides and hydrating ingredients to ensure efficient delivery within the skin’s barrier and slow release over time (for long-lasting hydration). Oily skin is a skin type that over-produces sebum (oil), which can give the skin a shiny, greasy-looking appearance. This can lead some people to believe that oily skin doesn’t need moisturizer. In reality, oily skin requires just as much moisture as other skin types. When your skin isn’t properly hydrated, it may even cause your skin to compensate by producing more oil. Hyaluronic Acid: Helps to retain moisture in the skin, leaving the skin feeling hydrated and plump with the added benefit of reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
