Bluth Studios was in decline and near bankruptcy. Hanna-Barbera too was facing financial difficulties. But The Simpsons had just premiered on Fox and the “Disney Renaissance” was just beginning with The Little Mermaid (1989). Warner Bros. Animation was experiencing something of a rebirth as well with Tiny Toon Adventures, thanks to an assist by Steven Spielberg. Even so, animation in the States was still heavily biased towards light and silly fare directed mostly at preteens. Batman: The Animated Series is regarded by many fans as the best version of Batman bar none. It’s also considered one of the two or three greatest animated series of all time, and for very good reason. The series is a stylish and groundbreaking gem for American animation. Ten years I’ve waited for it to arrive on Blu-ray and the result is worth every minute. Along with Warner’s new 2001: A Space Odyssey in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, this is a strong contender for the Best Blu-ray Release of 2018. It is absolutely not to be missed. Very highly recommended! the audience by more fully discovering the villains, revealing their origins stories, and exploring the psychological makeup that makes them who they

what was, and arguably remains, the definitive Batman, particularly in the long form (most fans would argue the Christopher Nolan films to be the finest single works the franchise has seen). more so than, the title character that really makes the show work, and that exploration comes not out of obligation but rather out of love for their Season 4 Unmasked (HD, 10 Mins.) - The cast and crew of Season 4 talk about the characters, storylines, and production of the fourth season and how the animation and story had changed since the show first started. As great as all these high-definition transfers are, though, they're not the main event of this particular set. Instead, it's the brand new special features that are included. For your viewing pleasure are a handful of episode commentaries, several featurettes, and most important, a brand-new documentary. Still, the digital copies include none of the special features, as far as I can tell. That means The Heart of Batman, along with episode commentaries and featurettes, are disc-only. Given that most new releases include the special features with the digital copies, this is a letdown.

In 1989, Tim Burton didn't necessarily reinvent Batman, but he did bring the darker side of The Dark Knight, many of the Inside Batman Beyond: Season 3" - A fascinating discussion on season three of Batman Beyond with producers Bruce Timm, Alan Burnett, Glen Murakami and Paul Dini. Diving into the discs, and much like last year's Batman: The Animated Series Blu-ray release, the HD remasters on this set are at times jaw-dropping. The traditionally-colored episodes (the first 26) look crisp and clean for the most part, though there's still dirt and scratches due to the quality of the source material. However, the digitally-colored episodes (the second 26) look crystal clear and beam with color. However, it's worth noting that, due to time-worn irreparable damage, 11 of the 52 episodes had to be "smart rezzed" from standard definition Digibeta video (the list of the up-scaled episodes can be found after the review). For what they had to work with, the episodes still look quite good, though there are unavoidable issues with the upscaling. Edge enhancement is rampant, colors look a little muted and motion and images can be jagged at times. It's apparent but eventually you stop noticing. Don't let that take away from that fact that these episodes have never looked better. They look great - Batman: The Animated Series HD-remaster level great. The level of detail, the sharpness of the image, the colors, it's legitimately stunning.
