Description

Tove Jansson wrote and illustrated her first Moomin book, The Moomins and the Great Flood (1945), during World War II. She said later that the war had depressed her, and she had wanted to write something naive and innocent. Besides the Moomin novels and short stories, Tove Jansson also wrote and illustrated four original and highly popular picture books. Philip Nel. "Moomin: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip. Maybe the time has come for me to throw up my hands and admit that I don't get the Moomins. A few years ago I waded unhappily in the Bergmanesque melancholia that is Moominvalley in November. And, now I've wandered aimlessly through the first book in the series. Though this one didn't leave me filled with the crushing meaninglessness of life that the other title did, I still have not caught Moomin Mania.

Check-In

In the 1990s, a comic book version of Moomin was produced in Scandinavia after Dennis Livson and Lars Jansson's animated series was shown on television. Neither Tove nor Lars Jansson had any involvement in these comic books; however, in the wake of the series, two new Moomin comic strips were launched under the artistic and content oversight of Lars and his daughter, Sophia Jansson-Zambra. Sophia now provides sole oversight for the strips. [15] TV series and films [ edit ]

The first words written about Moominvalley, quoted at the beginning of this text, reveal that one cannot fully understand “The Moomins and the Great Flood” and its deepest tones and layers without understanding the time and the world Tove Jansson created it in. The magic in discovering the safe and beautiful Moominvalley comes from the contrast, the uncertainty that defined the flood, and the quest to find Moominpappa. These are the first enchanting words written about Moominvalley and the Moominhouse, found at the end of the book “The Moomins and the Great Flood” (1945) and accompanied by this magical illustration: In all, nine books were released in the series, together with four picture books and a comic strip being released between 1954 and 1975.

The writing is simple but not devoid of lyricism. Being a translation, I can but wonder at how the original text feels, and if this is even more pronounced. The story follows a ‘typical’ search with mini adventures punctuating the narrative, some more dangerous than others, introducing us to different protagonists. It is so sweet and yet, you can feel the darker undercurrent. Tove wrote it during the WWII and published it in 1945. It is therefore not surprising that this is a ‘disguised’ tale of families divided and highlights an anxious yearning for safety in all its meanings. This is the very first book about the Moomins, and it’s not usually included in the series. It’s kind of embryotic, and tells the tale of how Moomin and Moominmamma set out to find the lost Moominpappa, and find the Valley and the house which acts as centre of the Moomin world. They also meet a very small animal obsessed with valuables – Sniff, of course. The adventure is here, but Jansson hasn’t quite found the melancholy tone and the multifaceted characterization of her following books. This is the only Moomin book which isn't genius. But it’s cute, and our boy was mesmerized as we read it all in three evening sittings. Read more this is my favorite drawing on the book, because of how simple and delicate and and innocent and evocative it is. this, to me, is just lovely. As Moomin and his mother make their way through the dark forest, over bogs and towards the sea, they meet a small creature more frightened than themselves, a girl with blue hair who has been living in a tulip, a vindictive and violent ant-lion, and a friendly sea-troll who thinks he may be a relation. There are sea serpents, the wrong kind of sunshine, and the Hattifatteners, who are both deaf and dumb and – Moominmama proclaims, when they fail to understand how desperate she is to find her husband – stupid too.

The Memoirs of Moominpappa, was first published in the UK in 1950 under the title, The Exploits of Moominpapa. What emerges

The Moomin stories concern several eccentric and oddly-shaped characters, some of whom are related to each other. The central family consists of Moominpappa, Moominmamma and Moomintroll. [4] Tove Jansson was already a respected artist when her first book was published in 1945. This can be seen in the way she illustrated the first Moomin adventure with a skilful mix of delicate sepia watercolour and delightful pen and line ink drawings. The realities of the war motivated Tove Jansson to create Moominvalley This first Moomin book is already establishing those aspects of the later series, in the search for Moominpappa, in finding the Moomin home of the later series and in overcoming the various threats of the journey. This book may not be as developed as the succeeding stories, but it sets their tone, and it introduces the key characters along with Jansson’s wonderful artwork. The Sort of Books edition is a beautiful edition to own if you can get it, and an excellent way to introduce a child to this magical world. As someone who grew up in Sweden, the Moomins have always been a part of my childhood. I watched the TV series with my parents because they were a bit too scary sometimes. I went to the library to borrow the computer games and sat in our closet, building ice castles with Moomin. I ate my cereal with a moomin-spoon, actually I still do. Even my wallet has Moomins on it. But I realised that I never read the books, therefore I decided that I should read them.

The Moomins, in case you haven’t already met them, are kind, philosophical creatures with velvety fur and smooth round snouts, who live in a beautiful Finnish valley. They sleep through the winter and when spring comes they wake and clamber down rope ladders hanging from their windows, ready for a bright new adventure. a b "När Mumin Erövrade Världen" (in Swedish). Several stage productions have been made from Jansson's Moomin series, including a number that Jansson herself was involved in. A great story for children, and I'm sorry that I didn't come to these books in time to read them to mine - I think I've a while to wait for grandchildren, but when they arrive Moomintroll will be waiting for them!
