The characters are very well created and many are very likeable especially Rita and Robbie who Rita meets when she lives at Foxcote in 1971. Robbie is a lovely kind man who helps Rita to heal and cast off a trauma from childhood. Rita is the lynch pin at Foxcote and throughthe book as none of the Harrington family function well without her and nor do her immediate family. The Forest provides a wonderfully atmospheric setting as it is also pivotal to the story which is shown in the clever use of descriptive language that makes it come alive. The Forest is part of the body and soul of Robbie and Sylvie and I find that fascinating. Sylvie's and Annie’s story are also really interesting and I enjoyed how their stories fit well into past events at Foxcote. Sylvie is trying to find a common language with a teenager who already doesn’t seem immature and childlike anymore. The beginning was boring. The second half is where the characters and story came alive. I was interested in the Scottish scenery and the setting of 1912 but it was more of a story about family and secrets and what could have been if these choices weren't made. It becomes more complicated when the patriarch of the family leaves his will a mess on purpose, still dominating control on his family.

Certainly, we don’t need total laissez faire. The bizarre idea that many supposed conservatives advance, that corporations should be free to do what they want, even monopolistic ones that use their massive power to aggressively advance left-wing goals, is just that—bizarre. What I liked best about the entire book was the character development of Antonia, who went from a downcast, put-upon, childless wife, to an upbeat, courageous, woman with a purpose! Normally I resist the classic ranting, agenda-filled, feminist cause that is all over books these days, but here . the change takes place in a believable, organic way that is incrementally progressive without being in-your-face aggressive!
