Revolutions in computing Find out how scientists are exploiting digital technologies to understand online behaviour and drive research progress

Swarm Rising by Steve Cole | Hachette UK

Adi is a scout for the aliens, who gave up on their physical form millions of years ago. They exist only in “dataswarm” and are an intelligent hive mind. Adi – Alien Digital Intelligence in the form of a girl – can bend the laws of physics and control digital data, but as a digital being she wants to know what it’s like to be human. Which is where Danny comes in. The Accelerometer measures the satellite’s non-gravitational acceleration in its respective orbit. The instrument helps scientists to study factors that cause non-gravitational accelerations such as air drag, winds, Earth albedo, and direct solar radiation pressure on the spacecraft. Supercool physics Experiments that probe the exotic behaviour of matter at ultralow temperatures depend on the latest cryogenics technology I was mildly disappointed that a book Co-written by an astronaut didn't really capitalise on that: there was some science, but much less than, say Christopher Edge puts in his middle grade novels; and the book was set mostly on Earth. Still, that's not really a criticism of the book itself.

Thankfully, the supernatural elements of the books blend neatly with the science. Take Adi’s powers, which allow her to do things like drive a car on water, bend buildings and walk through walls. She compares it to rolling a dice with an infinite number of sides, explaining how she simply rolls it enough times to get the outcome she desires, no matter how improbable it is. “At the quantum level, Danny, everything comes down to chance and probability.” This exhilarating futuristic adventure, the first in a trilogy, is a fast-paced, thrilling read, perfect for gamers and sci-fi fans. Danny Munday and his best friend Jamila, who lives next door, love gaming. Danny's parents are both into physics and astronomy but have separated because they couldn't stop fighting. Danny lives with his mother, who is so into her job that Danny doesn't get much attention, even if she's at home. This book by astronaut Tim Peake and writer Steve Cole is brilliant in concept but slightly patchy in execution. Peake is far better when he draws on his own experience as an astronaut. In Swarm Enemy, when Danny and Adi leave the Earth in a bubble of air to reach the ISS, the description of Danny’s emotions, the physical process, and the view of space and Earth is mesmerizing. You can tell that Peake is feeding off his own journey to the ISS, especially when he writes “I felt myself smiling through my soul”. It’s a beautiful touch to the story and feeds the imagination. Major Timothy Nigel "Tim" Peake CMG (born 7 April 1972) is a British Army Air Corps officer, European Space Agency astronaut and a former International Space Station (ISS) crew member.

Follow Tim

In 1974, scientists sent an interstellar message from Arecibo, Puerto Rico to a star system 25,000 light years away. It contained basic information about humanity and Earth. When Danny is kidnapped by a driverless taxi, and finds out his cousin has never heard of Adi, he finally realises something is very wrong. But what exactly is the ‘help’ the secretive Swarm is offering? Can Danny and his friend Jamila help Adi stop the Swarm Agents and give humanity a second chance?
