Praise was particularly aimed at the dark, cerebral narrative and storytelling, exploration and handling of mature themes and concepts, such as mental illness and domestic abuse, the sound design and musical composition, the atmospheric and frightening tone and direction, fear-inducing and tense gameplay, along with the graphics, and the symbolic nature of the monster designs. Silent Hill 2 is widely considered to be the best installment in the Silent Hill game series and is considered by many to be a masterpiece of the horror game genre. In October, Gans spoke once again about the upcoming relaunch and his third film, stating during an interview at the Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival that "I know a bit about the [next Silent Hill game]. A film adaptation of the first game in the series, Silent Hill, was released in 2006. It was adapted and directed by French film director, producer and writer Christophe Gans. Gans himself is a big fan of the Silent Hill game series. A second film adaptation, titled Silent Hill: Revelation written and directed by M. J. Bassett and based on Silent Hill 3, [151] was released in 2012. Christophe Gans expressed an interest in making a third film in a 2020 interview, stating that a script is being developed centred on puritanism. James Sunderland (Guy Cihi) comes to Silent Hill after apparently receiving a letter from his wife Mary (Monica Taylor Horgan), who had been suffering from an illness and died three years before. [17] While exploring the town, he encounters Angela Orosco ( Donna Burke), a teenage runaway searching for her mother; Eddie Dombrowski (David Schaufele), another teenage runaway; and Laura (Jacquelyn Brekenridge), a brattish eight-year-old who befriended Mary and accuses James of not truly loving her. [15] [18] [19] While searching a local park, James also meets Maria (Horgan), a woman who strongly resembles Mary but has a much more assertive personality. Maria claims that she has never met or seen Mary, and because she is frightened by the monsters, James allows her to follow him. [20] Arriving at a bowling alley, Eddie and Laura are found inside, but Laura runs off. Kietzmann, Ludwig (June 10, 2011). "Silent Hill: Book of Memories developed by WayForward". Joystiq. AOL Inc. Some of the more apparent themes of the narrative are grief, guilt, and punishment. Other noticeable themes in Silent Hill 2 are mental illness, [31] lust, love and abuse, [1] including an exploration of how it affects people. [3] Akira Yamaoka composed the music for Silent Hill 2. [10] At his home, Yamaoka took three days to write the music for "Theme of Laura", Silent Hill 2 's main theme, by combining "a sad melody" and "a strong beat", although he does not consider the melody to be the "most important" element of a musical piece. [32] He wanted the music to evoke emotions in the player. [32] Silent Hill 2 makes extensive use of sound effects ranging from screams to footsteps on broken glass. [6] In charge of the game's fifty sound effects, Yamaoka wanted to surprise the player with different sounds and create an unsettling environment. [32] He also incorporated occasional silence, commenting that "selecting moments of silence is another way of producing sound". [32] Top 100 Best Video Games".
