The Lie Regarding Fiber: Fiber is good for you, and you should try to get as much fiber in your diet as possible. Mention of specific companies, organizations, or authorities in this book does not imply endorsement of the I have struggled most of my adult life with being overweight. This led to a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. I was told it was not reversible so to be honest, I didn’t really try. I had a high stress job and other life cares and just figured I’d be okay if I took the meds that were offered.

a) Meat costs about 10x the cost of grains per calorie- which means that meat eating cows would be some FANCY ASS COWS. http://i.imgur.com/wV3DiTX.pngAnother point the author makes is just because whole grains may not be as bad for us as processed grains, that doesn't mean that they are good for us. And he is right, just because something isn't bad for us, doesn't mean it is good for us and certainly doesn't mean there isn't something better for us. But when discussing diet, we need to look at the overall content of the diet, the nutrient density of the foods, and the variety, balance, palatability, and sustainability of a diet. Just because we've only been eating grains for the past 10,000 years, doesn't mean we can't or shouldn't eat them. And just because some people don't tolerate gluten, doesn't mean that everyone needs to avoid it. Closing out each chapter/lie, you’ll find a take-home message to sum up the key truths to remember when speaking with your doctor or loved ones about the issue in question. You’ll also learn Dr. Berry’s personal opinions and practices on the matter in a “Do as I do” section. Finally, Dr. Berry includes homework in the form of recommended reading about each lie, if you’re curious for more. Berry is an advocate for Keto and Paleo diets as well as investigating the new short term fasting trend.

The first red light came on when the author declared that he would not refer to the scientific literature ... to save space. Space? Why are other authors not saving us this space, but meticulously refer to scientific articles that confirm their claims? This book contained a lot of woo, and a few gems. I learned some of the things were true as I looked them up, but not many of those. There's a great deal of appeal to conspiracy theory - and references to BIG-(whatever). In subsequent chapters, he encourages avoiding (vitamin D) supplements, then in the next chapter says they are absolutely necessary. He uses loaded terms like "junk food" - which is effectively meaningless. He appears to ignore the "organic" junk food sold in health food stores - and says that "a company would make very little money telling people to not eat junk food" - but some of these companies are making a fortune on just that! The findings: After studying mortality over a 20-year period, researchers led by Professor Kausik Ray at Imperial College London showed that 40mg daily of pravastatin, a relatively weak type of statin, reduced deaths from heart disease in participants by more than a quarter. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases... I can anecdotally concur that Scarsdale, Atkins and Keto are the only diets where I can really lose weight. I'm currently on Keto and do not feel hungry, nor do I have the post lunch energy crash that used to be so familiar. It's a boring diet after awhile. I do like sugar and desserts--though I'm learning how to make Keto substitutes. Anecdotally I feel better on Keto. I don't have gut trouble. I don't have constipation and headaches. And I've curtailed the "put on 10 pounds every year" that I've been on and am now losing weight. It started as fast weight loss and is now settling in at 1-2 pounds a month. Anecdotally I have to listen to my body. I don't know if science agrees, but for me, this is a healthier diet. I tend to agree with him. Unfortunately, I think the initial concerns regarding salt intake was more directed toward those who already had high blood pressure. At some point, the recommendation got taken out of context and ultimately bastardized.
