Description

The first brand to seriously introduce mini LED technology to the TV world was Chinese giant TCL. Yet sadly for UK shoppers those debut mini LED models didn't make it to our shores. That's changing for 2021 courtesy of TCL's new C825 range, represented here by the 65in 65C825K.

After correcting the greyscale, the white point now sits where it should meaning that the colour points now sit where they should be in most cases. There are a few very small errors with some points, but mainly at 100%, which is not as important as 75% and below, where the majority of images we watch are made up from. Overall, with DeltaE errors under one, we have no visible issues at all with TV and film content. HDR Results The TCL C935 is way better than the QNED, looks and sounds better, cheaper too. It gets super bright, not that I’d have it at max brightness, but it’s better to have it and not use it than need it and it’s not available. The local dimming works well, no complaints. And don’t have to worry about babying the thing, can leave it running no problems and also do as much gaming as necessary too without having to worry about burn in from HUD’s or anything like that. The likes of the P638 may have similar alternatives or see tweaks to the features list in different regions. The 65C815K’s pictures are… complicated. A unique mix of unexpected strengths and more predictable weaknesses. The C93, C83 and C73 Series all use the new Ai PQ2.0 processor, using Deep Learning with Super Resolution upscaling. I’m in a bright room, so I don’t think OLED’s are for me at the moment, until they start to get them brighter in a few years. I should stress that these colour issues only crop up with bright HDR10 scenes/image areas. Dark HDR10 shots and scenes look pretty normal where colours are concerned – although, ultimately, this just makes the excesses with bright scenes all the more glaring. TCL C83K Series comes with an elegant metallic central stand so that this large screen TV can be easily placed on any surface at home. Thanks to a winning combination of aggressive pricing and increasingly acclaimed performance, TCL has in recent times risen from pretty much nowhere to rivalling the likes of Samsung and LG with the number of TVs it shifts each year. VRR eliminates lag, judder and frame tearing effects for fluid and better detailed gameplay. This TV is 144hz VRR native: the highest standard in the TV industry and perfect for e-sport games and FPS.: smoother and seamless gameplay without any tearing. AMD Freesync premium for serious gamers with a fluid, tear-free gameplay experience at peak performance. TCL’s televisions can differ by market, especially between UK/Europe and the models that appear in the US and Australia. This year we gather that the European and UK versions of the C835 will be technically identical (the previous C825 had a key difference in the UK), while Australia got to meet the new range first, with the C835 range officially available from 1 June 2022.

You won’t find a traditional Filmmaker mode, as TCL has its own Film mode (or Movie mode, depending on your region!) with the same intention of delivering the picture as originally intended, along with a Sport mode. Everything from the C735K and above also comes with Calman Ready 3D LUT colour calibration, along with Adaptive Picture and an ambient sensor. On the audio front, all but the cheapest LCDs come with Dolby Atmos as standard, with both the QLED and Mini LED models using an Onkyo sound system – with the C835 and C935 adding an extra channel or two, along with Adaptive Sound tech (the latter also found on the C735). The TCL C835 TV made us sit up and think. In Mini LED, it has screen technology that equals OLED for impact and color, and beats it on brightness and dynamic range, so that its best images are breathtakingly impressive. And this is from a company that has its own breed of OLED in the wings, thanks to new ink-jet printed technology from its subsidiary China Star Optoelectronics Technology. This ink-jet OLED is due for launch in 2024, yet it’s hard to imagine how any new OLEDs will outperform what we are seeing here in value terms, especially after two more annual iterative improvements for Mini LED.

However, with both these solutions brightness will have reduced to around 400 nits by the time you’ve done what you need to do to remove all the colour ‘exaggerations’. All of the new TVs support at least HDR10 and HLG, with further additions as you rise up the price list. We found little need for color adjustment, but kept an eye on the motion settings, which allow control of blur and judder reduction on scales of 0 to 10. The upper settings of these introduced the excessively clean ‘video’ look where you’re seeing more interpolated frames than real ones. But the lowest settings, as selected automatically in ‘Movie’ mode, produced notable judder over long panning shots, or where cinematography was less than perfect. A quite high 6 or 7 for both settings was a compromise across material, with the Clear LED Motion toggle also activated, as this seemed to minimize any pasty video effect and deliver the most accurate color palette. There are a lot of ways to get the best HDR picture quality on TV: HDR10, HDR HLG, HDR10+ , HDR DOLBY VISION and DOLBY VISION IQ. This ultra slim design concept is using real metal, making it not only an elegant piece of craftsmanship but also a durable one that will blend into your living space.
