Wonder at a surprise egg, think about good/bad pets in response to a letter from the little girl in the story I Want a Pet, set up a pet shop role-play area with posters and pet food. After recapping on what a recount is, you will look at an example as a class. Together, you will identify and discuss the features that the children need to use in their own writing, including time conjunctions, personal pronouns and past tense verbs. Using this information and their plans from the previous lesson, children will then write their own recounts of a trip to the pet shop. A young boy walks into a pet shop, a little brown rat is confident that he is much more interesting that the plethora of exotic animals this shop sells.

Look after the newly arrived class pet, listen to a vet, discuss how vets help animals, role-play being a vet, weigh pets, measure out ‘medicine’ and bandage injuries. listening to and discussing a wide range of poems, stories and non-fiction at a level beyond that at which they can read independentlyUse what thas been learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. After briefly recapping on children's predictions from the previous lesson, you will read the book together. Children are encouraged to share both their opinions and understanding of the story, before retelling it in their independent activities, with the aid of picture prompts. In the alternative activity suggested, children show their understanding of the story through writing a book review. becoming very familiar with key stories, fairy stories and traditional tales, retelling them and considering their particular characteristics participate in discussion about what is read to them, taking turns and listening to what others say maintain attention and participate actively in collaborative conversations, staying on topic and initiating and responding to comments

Discuss exotic pets, make posters, paper chain snakes, playdough snakes, and junk model exotic habitats. Talk about the features of the immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another. Be confident when speaking in a familiar group, talk about ideas, and choose the resources needed for the chosen activity. most obvious of these is that the total value of all the pets for sale in the shop is one pound. This means it can be used as a starting point for money activities with children working with money up to the value of a pound.A little boy goes to a pet sale (where all the pets are so reasonably priced!) to find the perfect animal. He meets a rat first who pesters him throughout the story to buy him as the perfect pet. As a class, they will discuss what the shop was like, what animals they saw, and whether they bought an animal. Children will then use this information to complete a recount plan, using the provided structured sheet. In the alternative suggested activity, children are challenged to put themselves in the rat's shoes and improve a given recount plan of its day. Browse through our brilliant range of activities, worksheets and roleplaying resources that all support your teaching on the brilliant children's book The Great Pet Sale. We have a variety of resources that support your English and Maths lessons, a great way to mix up your lesson plans and try something new! The story is full of wonderful opportunities for developing mathematical thinking and the maths box I have put together is well worn! I have used it in maths activities and lessons with children from Foundation Stage to Y4 in a variety of ways – at the beginning of lessons to set the context for work with money, in the main part of the lesson using the ‘pets’ for differentiated money or problem solving activities and in plenaries as a novel summary of the mathematical thinking in the lesson. I have linked the ideas with play opportunities in a class ‘pet shop’ or ‘vets’ in the role-play area.
