Alison Brumwell, writing for The School Librarian, called Anderson "talented" and highlighted how she "brings a freshness to this memorable coming of age tale about defeating self-doubt and embracing family". Brumwell also praised Söderlund's "sumptuous cover and animated illustrations". [2] Sophie Anderson was born in Swansea, and now lives in the Lake District with her family. Her writing is most often inspired by folk and fairy stories, especially the Slavic tales her Prussian grandmother told her when she was young.

Review: The Castle of Tangled Magic – Book Craic Review: The Castle of Tangled Magic – Book Craic

Ebenso schön waren die vielen Anspielungen auf den Glauben. Also dem Glauben, der Hoffnung bringt und vieles möglich macht. This was really sweet! The love Olia had for her family (+ for her baby sister in particular) was really lovely to read, and I'd be happy to give this to any of the children in my life. Great messages about family, friendship, courage, the importance of people over material items, etc. The magical world is so well described and explored, and the magical creatures are so diverse and beautifully crafted. They are all unique characters with personalities and roles to further the plot. My personal favourites would be Deg a type of tree creature, and Feliks who is a fox spirit who protects the castle, and is a very important ally to Olia throughout the novel.

Twelve-year-old Olia knows a thing or two about secrets. Her parents are the caretakers of Castle Mila, a soaring palace with golden domes, lush gardens, and countless room. Literally countless rooms. There are rooms that appear and disappear, and rooms that have been hiding themselves for centuries. The only person who can access them is Olia. She has a special bond with the castle, and it seems to trust her with its secrets. Soon Olia learns that she is destined to save this land, but with time running out and her new friends and family in danger, she must search for the magic within herself - to save everything and everyone she loves. The Castle of Tangled Magic centers around Olia, a 13-year-old girl residing with her family in Castle Mila, a whimsical and weathered wooden castle with a rich history spanning 500 years. Although her family has transitioned from royalty to carpentry, Olia holds a deep affection for the castle. However, her world takes a dramatic turn when a storm threatens to destroy the castle. During this crisis, Olia discovers that the castle harbors an abundance of magic that is yearning to break free. To safeguard her family and their beloved home, Olia embarks on a perilous journey alongside Feliks, the castle's fox-like domovoi. Together, they venture into the Land of Forbidden Magic, where they must cut off an evil wizard's beard to restore the equilibrium of magic. A spellbinding middle grade fantasy about three sisters--adventurous Betty, curious Charlie, and proper Fliss--who go on a quest to break the curse that's haunted their family for generations. It’s hard for humans to keep their belief in magic as they grow older. You want to understand things, so you build ideas of what the world is in your minds, then reject anything that doesn’t fit into that.

The Castle Of Tangled Magic – Sophie Anderson

Across her bestselling novels, Sophie has won the Independent Bookshop Book of the Year Award and the Wales Book of the Year Award, and been shortlisted for the CILIP Carnegie Medal twice, the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, the Blue Peter Book Award, the British Book Awards’ Children’s Fiction Book of the Year, the Andersen Prize, and the Branford Boase Award.

Olia’s quest is to chop the wizard’s beard with a sword, as they believe his long beard is destructive. Olia is a bold and courageous young girl, always putting family first. It was refreshing to see a young sibling relationship in the book that is so wholly built on pure love. Olia's love for her family informs most of the choices she makes, however throughout the course of her journey, she learns much about herself and her family's history that encourages growth in her. Alongside our standout heroine, the cast of side characters Anderson creates is outstanding; something I have loved about Anderson's prior books is the found family aspect, the main character finding their herd, and I adored that about this book too. The characters Olia meets along the way are all so endearing, and as a reader, I cared for each of them individually, Feliks particularly, because he was just stellar! So dense the forest no light gleams Where I, aglow with youthful dreams, With rapturous hope and expectation, Summon up with invocation The spirits… From Ruslan & Ludmila by Alexander Pushkin, translated by D.M. The Castle of Tangled Magic Book Reviews | Toppsta

I absolutely adored this book, and flew through it in less than 24 hours. It has all of Anderson’s trademark heart and warmth in her writing, plus the Russian inspired tale is so well done, and so well woven into the storyline. As with her previous works, this book is inspired by Russian fairytales, and tells the story of Olia who lives in a castle with her family. When a storm starts to destroy the Castle, Olia discovers that her ancestor created a prison for magic and trapped all the magical creatures in this world, and the castle is the gateway between the two worlds. With the help of some magical creatures Olia travels to this world to save her home and the magical creatures. Olia lives in Castle Mila with her parents, Babusya and new baby sister Rosa. Her family, descendants of royalty, have lived in the castle for over five hundred years and although it's seen better days it's always been home. However, when winds caused by tangled magic start destroying the castle, Olia must embark on an adventure through a magical door to set the magic free and save her home. Autorka przenosi nas do absolutnie wyjątkowego Zamku Mila, w którym od wielu pokoleń mieszka już rodzina Olii. Korytarze w zamku skrywają wiele tajemnic i magii… Magi, którą żeby dostrzec trzeba najpierw w nią uwierzyć. Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical MomentsThe Castle Of Tangled Magic is a 2020 middle grade fantasy novel by Sophie Anderson, illustrated by Saara Soderlund. The story follows 13-year-old Olia as she journeys into a magical land to save her family and home. So begins the most incredible adventure into the Land of Forbidden Magic, an adventure that will require all of Olia’s courage, strength and self-belief to overcome the challenges and dangers she will face … Both my parents are carpenters, and they use one of the old ballrooms as a workshop. The floor and walls are covered with enormous pictures I’ve been drawing in there since I was old enough to hold a piece of chalk. Some of the other big rooms in the castle are used by the villagers who live nearby. My school puts on a show in the old theatre once a year. And the biggest room, the Great Hall, is used for almost every birthday, wedding and wake. At these gatherings, I hear stories about the castle’s history that are seasoned with myth and legend. There is a tale that Castle Mila was built by a lone carpenter, using one perfect axe. No nails were used, because the wooden pieces were cut to fit precisely together. And when the carpenter finished, the axe was thrown into the lake, which is why no other castle like it has ever been built. In the summer, I’ve spent whole days diving into the lake with my friends, looking for the axe. The search is fun, but I’m always slightly relieved when we don’t find it, because there is another tale that I’d rather believe instead. My grandmother, Babusya, says Castle Mila was built from magic, and that to understand why, I should talk to the spirits who live in and around our home. I’ve memorized her descriptions of house spirits, water spirits and tree spirits, and searched for them all my life. A few times I think I might have seen or felt something. But after thirteen years, I still have no proof these spirits exist. I keep on exploring though. There is nothing like the excitement of finding hidden spaces and forgotten treasures. I’m determined to find my way into every inch of the castle and discover all of its secrets. Now more than ever, because I have a new baby sister. Rosa is three weeks old and makes my heart swell with love every time I look at her. I haven’t figured out how to be the best big sister for her yet, but I want to be strong and brave and good, and show her all the wonders in the world. So, if there is magic hiding somewhere in our home, then I’m going to find it, and share it with my sister. And the illustrations by Saara Soderlund? STUNNING! My word, they really add to the beauty of the prose and embodies the world so well. There's a fairytale quality to them which is perfect for the Russian folktale inspired settings of Anderson's novel. This is truly a case of a book having it all.
