Most 4K TVs are also loaded with smart features, which are great for when you want to take a break from games, or for when your roommates want to get in some Netflix-and-chill time. Features include support and functionality for streaming media services, voice search, or mirroring content from your phone or tablet. What is 4K? The overall performance of the platform leaves something to be desired - as shows on Netflix did take a second or two to load - but overall speed isn’t a major issue. Watching The Favourite on Blu-ray, the TCL Roku takes a plainer approach to painting colours than the Hisense. Viewing the same scenes, Emma Stone’s complexion is less expressive, the blue of her dress more navy, and her hair less golden, too. Mashable is a registered trademark of Ziff Davis and may not be used by third parties without express written permission. Lastly, the 5-Series does have Dolby Vision support and Dolby Atmos passthrough. The former allows the TV to access the highest quality content over streaming services, while the latter can pipe spatial audio to your soundbar without a dedicated streaming player.

TCL 5-Series 2020 QLED TV review | TechRadar

This stands for Auto Low Latency Mode. It’s a nifty bit of tech which automatically detects a gaming signal and switches your TV to gaming mode. This essentially shuts down any surplus picture processing power, which in turns speeds up the gaming performance and cuts down on the dreaded input. For gamers who like the path of least resistance — i.e. getting into the game with minimal effort — it eliminates the need to switch your TV to its gaming mode before firing up the console. Do you need HDMI 2.1? TCL 50C720K 50 Inch QLED 4K Ultra HD Smart TV offers and online promotions, straight from the current Costco leaflet For gamers, a responsive TV is just as important as one with a good picture. With HDMI 2.0, and ALLM, you'll experience lowest latency and the best picture settings for gaming, automatically. The TV would overheat with HDR content, too. There was a period of time where the LED light would flash red, and a notification pop up signalling the TV was overheating. It happened across a range of apps, and while it did occur during the year’s hottest days, the window was open and the area well ventilated. I’m not sure heat is a great excuse considering nothing else was affected. ONKYO speakers, specially designed for sound clarity and precision allow a more realistic Dolby Atmos sound experience at home.Panasonic’s mid-range TVs have always rated very highly among the experts, though as recently as last year they were missing key tech for up-to-the-minute gaming. The Panasonic JX940 is a literal game-changer though, thanks to what it calls “Game Mode Extreme”. This adds 4K at 120Hz, VRR, and two HDMI 2.1 ports. That all combines with ALLM and AMD FreeSync Premium for an all-round smooth, lifelike gaming experience. However, it’s a remote – and it does what a remote needs to do. There are buttons for Netflix, Spotify, Rakuten TV and Apple TV, which replaces Google Movies in light of Roku’s continuing tiff with the tech giant. Ordinary” is the best word to describe the 55RP620K’s sound. Vocal clarity is decent across multiple sources, so you won’t need to worry about not catching the line of dialogue. If you’re concerned, the Dialogue Enhancer feature makes it slightly more pronounced, but not by much. AndroidTV's hands-free voice controls provide complete flexibility. Without leaving your chair, you can choose content, launch apps, turn on your set, switch inputs, search for movies, and much more. It's simple, user-friendly, and incredibly convenient. You can enable or disable voice control by switching on and off the dedicated button behind your TV. Similarly, upscaling isn’t wonderful, which isn’t surprising considering that the 5-Series uses TCL’s AIPQ processor that we largely found unsuccessful at upconversion on the TCL 6-Series. Making matters worse, its lower native refresh rate of 60Hz means motion processing isn’t nearly as good as the TCL 6-Series that’s just one step above it. Give it content filled with vibrant colours, though, and it can spring into life: the reds, yellows, neon blues, pinks and greens of Lamentis-1 in the Loki TV series make for an attractive image. Given how similar the TCL Roku has been to the Hisense Roku, you might expect picture quality to be along the same lines. It is in some ways, but in others it’s clear TCL and Hisense have taken differing approaches. If there’s a silver lining to the 5-Series’ performance, it’s that it only has 11ms of lag and has a game mode that will turn on automatically when you turn on a video game. Combined, these two features certainly help games feel more responsive – something we can attest to after playing several hours of intense UFC 3 matches on the 5-Series – but without HDMI 2.1 and/or 120Hz support, it’s really not a great fit for the Xbox Series X or PS5. This is tech jargon for how long it takes your TV to turn the data it's receiving into an actual image on the screen. The lower the input lag (counted in milliseconds) the better. This means the gaming action will be as up-to-speed as possible, without lagging behind what’s happening on the control pad or your opponent’s screen. What good is it if your trigger and target are out of sync? Milliseconds might not sound like something to worry about, but just 100ms can make a huge difference — making games difficult to play, in fact. What is ALLM? The interface is the same as what you’d find on every other Roku product – except it’s coloured red, which is a nice change from the usual green or purple. The Roku OS has never had the flash of other interfaces, but it’s never really been interested in that either.
