But resistance adds cost and risk, and not having to resist is an advantage conferred on children who identify, and were allowed to identify, as white. Footnote 46 This book does a wonderful job of explaining and exploring the unschooling approach to education. While I do not think that unschooling is the approach that best suits our family, I enjoyed hearing about what works for her children and the research behind that methodology. Also, surveys about religion tend to reflect a Christian-centric view, such as by emphasizing prayer and faith over other kinds of religious observance. Therefore, Christian respondents are more likely to appear as highly religious, simply based on the wording of the questions. God is the source of all wisdom and the Biblical definition of wisdom simply put is to fear the Lord. True wisdom is only found in being completely obedient to God as He has commanded in His Word, and in fearing Him.

Wisdom of God will lead to a life of ultimate joy. We were created to live eternally in the presence of God, where we will be with the source of all wisdom. To fear God means to fear running away from Him. It is keeping blinders around our eyes so that we can’t see anything else around us – just the straight path before us, laid out by Scripture, pointing us to our Savior. God will meet our needs. God will take care of our enemies. God will guide us on our path. Now, we do not unschool our children, nor did this book make me want to jump on the unschooling bandwagon. However, because I believe that as a mother I can receive personal revelation for what is best for my children, I firmly believe that God called this mother to unschool her children because that was what was best for them. And it's okay that it isn't what is best for us. On average, abiders were more likely to earn bachelor’s degrees than nonabiders, since success in high school sets them up for success in college – as also shown by my analyses of siblings. The bump varies by socioeconomic status, but among working-class and middle-class teens, abiders are more than 1 ½ to 2 times more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree than nonabiders. Likewise, identifying the existence of white goods does not mean denying the poverty and oppression of people who are white, or that white goods benefit every single white person in every instance. White goods are categorical. They exist in the aggregate. They offer unfair advantages in an already unfair system that allocates many harms to many people—women, differently abled, gender nonconforming, and the like. Finally, as I will explore later, white goods depend on violence. This book came at a great time as I agree with Julie’s practical advice on how to implement what she calls “God schooling” in our homeschool life. Surprisingly, this book is certainly a mouth dropper and eye opener!
