One of the few books to make our list of best sailing books that doesn’t take place on a sailboat! 15. Seraffyn’s European Adventure – Lin and Larry Pardey A staggering survival story written by Steven Callahan about 76 days spent in a life raft in the Atlantic Ocean. Considered one of the greatest adventurers of our time, Tilman has sailed and climbed in some of the world’s most remote and environments. His sailing books are must-reads for those who dream of straying from the beaten path and sailing in high-latitudes. In many ways, Slocum was the first cruiser and the trouble he gets himself into, the people he meets, and the places he goes are things to which we can all relate. 3. A World of My Own – Robin Knox-Johnston

Not bad. I liked it but certainly not my favorite James Patterson co-written book. I was drawn to the book because of the lost at sea aspect; a scenario that is terrifying! The mixture of a murder plot and scandalous relationships really added to the plot. I did not connect with the characters and found the story a bit predictable. I am not one that is going to complain about the typical shark scene of being lost at sea because, well, honestly as a reader I was waiting for it. The snake scene I’m just indifferent about. In Seraffyn’s European Adventure the young couple journey in their 24ft boat to the Baltic, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Germany. Without engine, electronics, or gadgetry these scrappy sailors accomplish remarkable things through sheer endurance and resourcefulness. Since the death of her husband, Anne Dunne and her three children have struggled in every way. In a last ditch effort to save the family, Anne plans an elaborate sailing vacation to bring everyone together once again. But only an hour out of port, everything is going wrong. The teenage daughter, Carrie, is planning to drown herself. The teenage son, Mark, is high on drugs and ten-year-old Ernie is nearly catatonic. This is the worst vacation ever. The husband died sailing but the wife and 3 children (2 grown, 1 tween) kept the boat. This trip they decide to go sailing with the husband's brother, Jake. The wife is remarried and worth a lot of money so when weird things keep happening to the boat, theres a clear motive for murder. There may also be drugs involved in Jake's life, so theres motive. Someone is out to get them, will they make it out of the trip alive?! SO GOOD! The ending got to be a little much but I enjoyed it. This is exactly what I expect out of James Patterson.

It’s a testament to the ability of the human mind to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and heartening for fellow sailors who will encounter situations that put their own courage to the test. It’s a great read and details one of the most incredible feats of the modern era. 4.

Kon-Tiki was the first book about sailing that I ever read. And really it is more about adventuring than sailing. The sheer foolhardiness of building a balsa wood raft and sailing it 4000 miles from Peru to Tahiti is enough to pique the interest of any adventurous soul. I really enjoy Patterson books although his collaborations with other authors not always so much. This one is perfect for a beach read or if you just want something that isn't challenging. The Dunnes are taking the family boat out for a trip together to try and reconnect & sort out their issues. Peter Carlyle is the step dad and staying behind in New York, his wife, her three kids and her brother in law from a previous marriage head off. Personal problems arise, a horrendous storm hits and then there is an explosion, certainly not the best start to a holiday. Stranded, hurt and presumed dead, the Dunnes need to do what they can to stay alive. Raban sailsfrom Seattle to Juneau in a small boat, deftly describing the history of First Nations, Captain Vancouver, andlife at sea as he travels up the coast. In this list, you’ll find books about sailing around the world, first-hand accounts of daring Antarctic adventures, true crime nautical thrillers, and meditative musings about life at sea. Be sure to let us know your favorite sailing books in the comments below. He sails from England alone for several monthsand when it seems he is just about to win…(well, I won’t spoil it for you!). His accountis a great adventure story and alsoa deep meditation on zen philosophy. 2. Sailing Alone Around the World – Joshua SlocumI've never read a James Patterson book before and I don't think I'll read a second. It reads like a goosebumps book* that he had to pepper with "adult themes" Y'know because adults cheat on everyone all the time. It's also dreadfully dull, probably because each obstacle was so easily over come that more had to appear, to just offset the tedious monotony. There's no tension at all, none. It's like "OH NO A SHARK! oh you killed it already? Ok now what?" And it's like that through the entire book. It's a bad book, I wish I could rate it minus stars! But actually, it's so bad you have to read it. Just drink a lot before hand, for yourself. Your life can change in a minute so live each day to the fullest! This is what we often think or hear from others when we are faced with a change or a problem in our lives. But can we really be aware of how things can actually go wrong until we experience it first-hand? A 41-year-old, after sailing right into a terrible storm, woke up to find out her fiance was gone and the land was nowhere in sight. This is an incredible story of endurance and her physical and mental strength. Moreover, it is an authentic example of how a paradise can easily turn into a living hell. However, it also serves as a reminder to cherish every single moment and that our life is worth fighting for. Author: Tami Oldham Ashcraft 10. The Lonely Sea and the Sky If you’ve ever cursed your boat, you’ll sympathize with the exasperated (but ever hopeful) Mowat in “The Boat Who Wouldn’t Float”. One of the best works about the sea and the search for harmony with the world around. For this small story, the author’s was not only honored the Pulitzer Prize in 1953, but a year later received the Nobel Prize. The story is significantly different from other works of the master – it is philosophical, simple, slow, and at the same time incredibly tense.

This is the book that inspired us to buy a boat and go sailing! Bernard Moitessier was a French sailor who raced in the 1968 Golden Globe, thefirst single-handedaround the world race.

This was a real good story and had a great ending...I am so glad he left out all that gory stuff, kept me on the edge of my seat. Don't know if I will be getting on a sailboat for a vacation any time soon!! Written in 1951, The Old Man and the Sea was Ernest Hemingway’s last major work of fiction. It follows the story of a Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin off the coast of Cuba. The classic nautical novel was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and is one of the author’s most famous works. Lin and Larry Pardey are living proof that you don’t need to be wealthy to see the world. They traveled for 26 years (covering the equivalent of 5 circumnavigations) in their home-built cutters, Seraffyn and Taleisin. In this terrifying true story, two couples sail to a remote Pacific atoll, but only one couple makes it off the Island alive. As told by the defense lawyer, Vincent Bugliosi (who also prosecuted Charles Manson), the investigation that follows is a riveting true-crime murder mystery.

I love James Patterson so much. I don't know if its even fair to say that since he always has co writers but this book was so good! Short chapters ✅ Fast moving plot ✅ Interesting Characters ✅ However, events soon conspire to render the trip less therapeutic and, in fact, close to disastrous. More than just a travelogue, Raban recounts personal challenges: his relationship with his father, and being a good dad to his young daughter Julia. The Pacific Northwest history is absolutely fascinating and Raban is a deep and thoughtful soul who you can’t help but empathize with. 19. The Incredible Voyage – Tristan Jones Katherine inherited a 100 million when her philandering husband died in a boating accident a few years previously on the same yacht. She is a cardiac surgeon who works long hours at the expense of her children. Happily she has remarried to Peter a lawyer who is all things that lawyers are known for. Sharks, explosions, CIA assassins, mistresses to perfect and a gung ho DEA officer.

At 18 years old, Tania Aebi was going nowhere, until her father presented her with an ultimatum: she could go to college or get a boat. She chose the latter and for the next two and a half years and 27,000 miles, she sailed the world with only her cat as a companion. Sailing adventure books
