Although I’m not wild about the appearance of the boa, it really did give a close fit. The ZG23s are certainly eye-catching and the “cloud white and lucid blue”, as the box describes them, are perhaps not the colourway I would have chosen, but it’s OK because I’ve got a lovely Adidas Classic Club midlayer in a similar colour. And as Ian Poulter always says: “Look good, feel good, play good.” I cannot believe how strong and stable I feel in the swing wearing them. I’d go so far as to say these shoes have managed to wake me up and help me escape the spikeless shoe cult and have opened the door of proper golf shoe performance. I’ve worn these shoes now for a few weeks so I’m fairly comfortable commenting on how the FootJoy HyperFlex Carbons are pretty much faultless. I’ve worn them on dry links turf at Furness golf club in Cumbria, and on my home course of Sand Moor in West Yorkshire and the performance has been excellent.

I slipped them on and of course there’s that initial tightness that comes with trying on any new pair of shoes for the first time, but once I had worn them around the house for a few hours – don’t pretend you don’t do this too – they started to mould to my feet and I couldn’t wait to get them out on the course. The more I looked at the FJ HyperFlex Carbon shoes, the more I loved them. They’re bright and colourful without being too in your face, and give off a youthful player vibe that I like.All this technology really does work. There is a firm and slightly springy feel underfoot. The outsole offered excellent grip from the six cleats and hybrid traction bar configuration that Ecco calls its Dynamic Traction System. There was no hint of slipping even. when going for that extra few yards off the tee.
