Arguably the most surprising thing about the BU8500 given Samsung’s usual strengths in this area, is that motion doesn’t look quite as cleanly handled as it is on TCL’s 55C735K. Our halfway house still offers a sense of bass when Electro blasts away the police cars, but it’s achieved through fuzziness rather than any power or impact. There isn’t much of a leading edge to the sound. Information about the maximum vertical viewing angle, within which the image on the screen is of acceptable quality. In terms of image upscaling, the processor is still very efficient. From SD content and live content up to 720p, 1080p and 4K, the TV did not show any obvious artifacts from the upscaling process. But keep in mind that the end result is always very dependent on the quality of the original content. For the most part, though, the UE50BU8000’s ‘journey’ from SDR to HDR is more illustrated by the issues HDR causes than the clear positive difference we’d have expected.

Simply relax and enjoy all the content you love, with a 4K upscaling TV that adapts to give you the best 4K Ultra HD picture. But it doesn’t stop there. The sound adjusts to perfectly suit what you’re watching. A TV drama or the tennis, you’ll really feel part of the action. Voice control is through Bixby, as has been standard for the last few seasons, but this time, the option to choose Alexa is also built into the system (Google Assistant has been promised as a later update). Press the microphone button on the remote and ask for content genres, a specific film or channel, a change of inputs or to open an app, on top of all the standard services such as weather, news and egg timers.

Its panel is a VA type, raising hopes of decent contrast but, predictably, meaning that you’ll see colours and contrast start to reduce if you have to watch the screen from much of an angle from the side. Whether it’s boxset binging, movie night or game time, the Samsung UE55BU8000 rises to the occasion with its premium picture quality.
