The nominal depth of the measurement is 3/4 inch (19 mm); this depends on the density and other characteristics of the material being measured. When held against the surface, as shown below, the instrument transmits a signal into the material. When using the two pin measurement mode, all you need to do in most applications is lightly touch the pins to the material you're testing (there's no need to fully insert them into the material), minimising the level of damage. The meter detects the actual percent moisture content of wood (in % MC) and converts these results to a wood moisture equivalent (WME) when measuring concrete, dry wall and other building materials.

Sub-Surface Readings – Deep wall probe method

Measures moisture beneath the surface without drilling holes to a nominal depth of 0-20mm. Hold against the wall to allow a radio signal to penetrate the surface. This is the best method for assessing the moisture content beneath a tiled / covered surface. The relative moisture level of the material under investigation on a scale of 0-999.
