Winsor & Newton Professional Acrylic Gesso - a range of superior artist quality gesso that provides excellent absorbency, adhesion, coverage and tooth in fewer coats. Here I’m washing in Raw Umber – purposely diluting only with water. This gives the paint more of a transparent watercolour feel, so it is perfect for starting to establish the tones within the fish. Whilst I’m painting, I’m thinking of how I would approach it if I was drawing.

According to Golden, their acrylic glazing liquid contains acrylic polymers, retarder and water ( Source). They also add acrylic flow release to help with blending and to improve how the paint flows. Using glazes in your acrylics is a method from classical oil painting called ‘in-direct’ painting. You create an monochrome underpainting called a Grisaille. (You can see an in-depth lesson on How to create a Grisaille portrait with Oils) I found it quite hard to achieve decent strings after mixing the tar gel with fluid acrylic, and I found the working time was very short, before it started being too gloopy to make long strings. However, when used neat, it was very easy to control and create strings, loops and other effects. This may be because it needs to mixed and left to sit overnight. These drips that were unmixed, see the swatch on the right, were completely clear and levelled out quite a lot, as well as being un-absorbent on the surface. The modern organic pigments are the most transparent. Some examples of modern pigments include Pthalo Blue, Phthalo Green, Quinacridone Magenta, and Hansa Yellow Medium. Here’s my brief explanation of the difference between organic and non oraganic pigments. Cobra have created an excellent series of eight videos on painting with water-mixable oils and using mediums.

The problem with using water for glazing is that it dilutes the acrylic binder that makes the paint adhere to the canvas. If you add too much water to the paint, it can weaken the paint film. This can lead to adhesion problems.

It was opaque but still slightly more transparent than I expected as you can see from the swatch on the left. Liquitex Professional Clear Gesso - premium quality gesso that provides good adhesion and absorbency for acrylic paints whilst drying clear and thus preserving the surface's original colour. Once you have finished you art work you can apply an overall glaze to your painting. You can also try glazing your work throughout the painting process to produce delicate colour effects and depth. Regular acrylic paints also dry darker, even if you don’t add medium to them. I wrote an entire post about why acrylics dry darker if you’re interested in reading more about this. Related Questions What’s the Difference Between Gloss Medium and Glazing Medium? Artisan Thinner changes the colour, it is lighter temporarily. It mixes in easily, is not thin like a solvent.Flow improver is an additive that decreases the surface tension of acrylic paint and increases its flow. Some brands have their own name for flow improver such as; flow aid and wetting agent, but they are all inherently the same thing. Most acrylic mediums could be used as a substitute for glazing medium but acrylic gloss medium will be the most reliable substitute in a pinch. It has the most fluid consistency and a gloss finish that ensures the clarity of the final piece. The short answer is no. Linseed oil is not toxic. The longer answer is that it depends on what form of linseed oil you are using. Cold-pressed linseed oil is non-toxic, but heat-processed linseed oil can release toxins into the air. If you are using heat-processed linseed oil, I recommend using it in a well-ventilated area. I have heard that some artists add a little bit of cobalt drier to their linseed oil to speed up the drying time. Is this safe?

I’ve prepared the canvas board by painting a coloured ground over the white surface using a mix of Titanium White and Raw Umber. Start with some Titanium White and then add a little Raw Umber just to tint it, using the palette knife to mix, aiming for a colour that’s a light grey tone. I made a chart for each of the four groups of mediums. Many water-mixable oil painters like to use M. Graham Walnut Oil Alkyd Medium, which is not a water-mixable medium, but since you use so very little it does not interfere with the water-washability at all. So I added it to all the tests. I also added mixing with just water and neat paint for a baseline comparison. There is no universal ratio of glazing medium to the pigment that can be used. You will need to experiment to find what suits your needs. The strength of each colors’ tint varies; some pigments may require quite a bit to make any difference, while others are strong enough to need little more than a few drops. Liquitex Soluvar Acrylic Varnish - A solvent based varnish which dries to a permanent clean finish but can be removed with high strength genuine mineral spirit or turpentine.Ten types of wet Golden Acrylic Mediums partially mixed with Golden Acrylic Paint Which Acrylic Medium Should I Use? You may think that acrylic paint is already glossy, but different brands have different levels of sheen. Slow drying mediums are usually viscous gels with either a clear or cloudy look. They dry completely clear so it will not effect the colour once it has dried.

It’s important to wait for the previous layers to dry before applying glazes over the top of it. If the previous layer isn’t totally dry, it may lift when you paint over it. The time that it takes for acrylic paint to dry varies depending upon the weather, the brand of the paint, and other factors. I discuss this in at length in my post How Long Does It Take for Acrylic Paint to Dry. The UK manufacturer Winsor & Newton has a range of alkyds, which cover both the more fluid and the more gel-like options. Wingel, for instance, is a modern gelled megilp while Liquin is an all-purpose painting medium just like Galkyd. If you want a stronger tint you can add as many more layers as you like. Just follow steps four to six until you feel your glazing painting is complete. Manufacturers generally recommend that you don’t dilute acrylic paint with more than 25-30% water by volume. There are some circumstances where you can exceed this amount, such as when you’re painting with acrylics on watercolor paper. The pigment will settle into the fibers of the paper and this helps with adhesion. It also enhances the adhesive properties of the paint, which makes it suitable for collage work. Gel mediums are available in different types, like gloss & matte, and also different textures.Pumice gels use sand and gritty concrete-like solids in a transparent binder to create texture, meaning their ability to create peaks is decreased slightly and their opacity is slightly increased. If you make an error with acrylic mediums, it is easy to let the paint dry and repaint the image. To achieve different looks, you can add different mediums to the paint. For some of the finer details, I dip the brush into the Acrylic Glazing Liquid Gloss. This helps when you want to increase the flow of the paint yet still keep the body. Having an acrylic medium is crucial when learning how to glaze with acrylics because it keeps the viscosity and paint film of the thin application. Step #3 – Mixing a Tonal Colour String
