Description

A few conifers such as yew and Thuja, can be pruned hard and will regrow. Most conifers will not regrow from old wood if you prune into it, so take care. full sun to part shade in average, moist, well-drained soils. Tolerant of chalk soils but prefers slightly acidic soil. Protect from strong winds.

Depending on which nutrient is deficient, mulching, using compost or using a spray enriched with the right nutrients is the remedy to this common ailment. We have one of the widest range of trees in the UK, and for those plants which we cannot despatch next day we will normally despatch within 4 weeks. The despatch time for different products will be confirmed when products are added to your shopping basketRoot-balled and bare-root conifers are available in late-autumn and winter and should be planted as soon as possible after they arrive No gardener depends 100% on natural rainfall. Even the most water conscious garden appreciates the proper hose, watering can or wand. Unlike other hardwood plants, conifers need very little pruning. However, if green branches appear in trees with coloured or variegated foliage, these should be pruned more often. Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana is commonly known as Lawson’s Cypress and is a family of evergreen conifers native to the Western USA, from the coast up to an altitude of almost 2,000 metres. As conifers, Lawson’s Cypress are very useful, thriving in oceanic climates and well able to withstand strong winds. They are a good choice ofornamental coniferand as a hedging screen in more exposed areas. First introduced in the UK in 1850, when seeds were sent to a nurseryman Peter Lawson in Scotland. Today, there are over 450 cultivars. The variety Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ellwoodii is a slow-growing, large to medium evergreen shrub with a conical habit. It boasts beautiful bluish-green young foliage borne in short, soft sprays. The foliage matures to a grey-green hue and takes on a steely blue shade in the winter. This stunning conifer variety was found in 1915 by G. Ellwood of Swanmore Park UK. Its still popular today, a testament to its many qualities. Holder of the Award of Garden Merit (AGM) by Royal Horticultural Society.

Once planted, keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons. Installing a mulch mat will aid in this. Do not just mow the grass around the area as this will encourage it to grow more vigorously. Pruning Advice for Lawsons Cypress Ellwoods Gold Conifers Dwarf conifers are not actually dwarf, but are just slower growing. They will eventually become larger and could outgrow their space. This is fairly common with most conifers as they grow, and they can be replaced when it happens. However, their size can be controlled to some extent by pruning and trimming them. Dig out an area for the tree that is about 3 or 4 times the diameter of the container or rootball and the same depth as the container or rootball. Use a pitchfork or shovel to scarify the sides of the hole. Whilst working on the new tree shape remove any obvious dead branches or brown bits which will not only make the tree look nicer but it will let more light in to reach the foliage and encourage new growth. Towards the end of the tree shaping process a slightly ugly gap remains but we sometimes find this can be improved by using a non damaging rope or cable, in an as aesthetic way as possible (we use a dark colour rope of cable) to internally pull a branch to close the gap. From the aesthetic point of view we sometimes use a brown paint to disguise any excessively visual cuts on the branches)Full Sun in cold climate preform better / Half Shade / Full Shade, in place with hot summer will grow better in half shade to full shade Since the pruning has been performed in the winter there will be new growth in the next few months. Root rot can occur when the plant is getting too much water. To remedy this, increase drainage around the plant. Chamaecyparis (sometimes referred to as False Cypress) is often used for topiary or the Japanese art of Niwaki (nurturing trees to grow into a particular shape). This is a slow-growing conifer with a naturally compact and dense shape. Despite their striking looks, these topiary pom pom trees are low maintenance, needing a trim at most twice per year. Light with air ventilated, clean from dust apparently the plant doesn’t like long time with dust on the leaves

Sprinklers: Attached to the ends of garden hoses, these act as an economical irrigation system. Standing Spike Sprinklers are usually intended for lawns and deliver water in a circular pattern. Rotating Sprinklers deliver a circle of water and are perfect for lawns, shrubs and flower beds. Pulse-jet sprinklers cover large areas of ground in a pulsating, circular pattern. The head usually sits up on a tall stem, except for when watering lawns. Oscillating sprinklers are best for watering at ground level in a rectangular pattern. Removing weeds as soon as they appear is a good way of ensuring that valuable moisture is not lost. Mulching also reduces moisture loss from the top layers of soil. Never spray with fertilizer or feed during hot, bright weather or you will risk scorching the leaves. Spray in overcast weather instead.Full sunlight is needed for many plants to assume their full potential. Many of these plants will do fine with a little less sunlight, although they may not flower as heavily or their foliage as vibrant. Areas on the southern and western sides of buildings usually are the sunniest. The only exception is when houses or buildings are so close together, shadows are cast from neighboring properties. Full sun usually means 6 or more hours of direct unobstructed sunlight on a sunny day. Partial sun receives less than 6 hours of sun, but more than 3 hours. Plants able to take full sun in some climates may only be able to tolerate part sun in other climates. Know the culture of the plant before you buy and plant it! Feathered tree: Branches from the bottom of the trunk all the way up. These branches can be removed if a clear stem is required. Yes, When growing in containers need to keep the plants small, start with pot that will be potted in 20% more than the root ball, every time that the tree arrive to full capacity need to switch to bigger until arrives to desirable size, better to use this method because the soil lose the viability over time and it’s efficient of care for the tree, when the plant big need to switch part of the soil, drainage it’s important and need to make holes and to use peat soil and maybe some lava grit or just to use potting mix and, put a bottom for the container and when water the plant let it fill the bottom but also need to dry in the same day, if not mean that there too much water Blooming information

Where pot sizes are specified in a range (e.g. 30-43 litre pot) we can not supply a specific pot size, you will be supplied with which ever size is available at the time. The tree(s) will be within the specified height range. Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society for its noteworthy qualities Top grafted tree: A height next to this form refers to the length of clear stem, which will not grow taller. Only the head of branches will develop. Ideal for small spaces. Most conifers like an open sunny position, but there are conifers suitable for most positions. See our guides to conifers (and other plants) for wet soils, sandy soils, clay soils and chalky soil. Climber: Naturally climbing plant. Usually delivered running up a cane, ready to position in the garden.
