The number one thing to remember for how to paint newly plastered walls is to make sure they’re completely dry first. To get started, lay down dust sheets and mask off skirting boards, trim and fixtures. As fresh plaster acts like a sponge, it’s important to water down your first layer of emulsion, otherwise known as a ‘mist coat’, to seal the surface and use less paint. The two top coats don’t need to be watered down. Therefore, once it’s dry simply paint as you normally would with your favourite colour.

It is a trade product and his means superior quality to general commercially bought paints and primers Tiles Clean with sugar soap, then wipe over with white spirit to get rid of any dirt and soap scum. Use a specialist glass, tile or difficult-surface primer followed by paint, or Ronseal One-Coat tile paint (which needs no primer). Most of the primers I tested did a decent job. I have to say, I was put off Zinsser 1-2-3 Bullseye, and Tikkurila Otex Akva to some extent as they performed less well than the others on melamine specifically in this test, and to be honest, if you can find one primer that will work brilliantly on all surfaces, surely that keeps life simple?! So for now I’ll ignore those two, and concentrate on the ones that performed consistently well in my test:

Credit limit exceeded

o It takes a long time to dry on some surfaces – it says 4-6 hours, but was less on the woodstain, and significantly more on the melamine

Faulty ItemsOur first average we look at for Dulux Difficult Surface Primer is to judge it against other products from the same brand, in this case it’s Dulux. This tells us that there are a total of 712 Dulux products at The Range. It is worth noting that you can still paint over the sealer if you change your mind, but if you are going to paint, you’ll be better off using a coloured sealer/primer. It has a thin consistency which means that you typically only need one coat to seal your MDF, which will be touch dry within 30 minutes. If it needs another coat you’ll have to wait for a couple of hours before you can apply.

When the surface was keyed, all the primers performed significantly better; I’d give both Crown products, Whitsons and Zinsser All-Coat 10 out of 10, but the other two (Otex Akva and Bullseye 1-2-3) still weren’t perfect, a small amount of the primer did scratch off in my test Wood Treated with Ronseal Yacht Varnish Before painting any surface, it should be free from dirt, grease, rust, dust and loose flakes of old paint. Some require primers and/or undercoats to provide a base suitable for painting ... It is an all in one coating but will take a 2 coats to cover and may be painted over with both solvent and water-based top coats. The key thing to consider here, is how the price of Dulux Difficult Surface Primer compares to others but taking into account the quality and features of Dulux Difficult Surface Primer over the other options.Application : Brush, short pile roller or spray. STIR THOROUGHLY BEFORE USE. After suitable preparation, apply one coat of Dulux Trade Super Grip Primer, followed by the appropriate Dulux Trade paint system. Crown PX3 (for those who can’t remember, this is the solvent-based one). This is a bit of an anomaly. It did absolutely everything it said on the tin, adhesion was great and it stopped the woodstain bleeding through. Overall, it was probably marginally the best of the bunch in terms of adhesion. But I don’t like it! Sorry Crown – I love you really, the guys at my local CDC will kill me, but I don’t like this product. Maybe it’s just me, but I found: However, we then like to go a little deeper to explore more detail about the product by looking at products in the same category as Dulux Difficult Surface Primer. That then tells us that there are 736 products in the DIY category at The Range.

The big issue with MDF is the edges, these are more porous than the top/bottom of the board and need more attention. To get a really smooth non-porous finish on the edges you can use wood filler or MDF edging tape. If the edges aren’t going to be seen simply add an extra coat of sealer/primer and rub down. What Alternatives are There to Specialist MDF Primers and Sealers? Again, for this part of the test I had run out of Whitsons, so the four products tested were Zinsser B-I-N, Zinsser AllCoat, Crown PX3 and Crown PX4.

However, if you don’t want to paint your MDF there are a few alternatives to primer/sealer. Effectively, they do the same job - seal the MDF - but in different ways. If you like the natural look of MDF and want to add some protection you can use a clear varnish - choose matt or gloss - to keep your MDF looking like new. An oil-based varnish is the best choice for this. You apply in much the same way as primer/sealer/paint, with a brush or roller. MDF Unpainted MDF needs sealing before painting. Use a specialist sealant such as Johnstone's MDF primer followed by an undercoat, before glossing or eggshelling. Zinsser B-I-N, which let’s be honest you’re going to have in your van anyway. I didn’t test it on oil-based gloss or on melamine, but it did really well on varnish and woodstain. It’s hard to review in a way, as everyone already knows it and there has been so much written about it online, I don’t think there’s anything I can add! Available online here. The primer can be applied by brush, roller or spray. It is available in 0.25L, 0.5L, 1L and 2.5L sizes depending on the size of your tasks. If you want a good smooth paint finish on your MDF, there isn’t any real alternative to priming or sealing. Medium-density fibreboard is made from small wood fibres such as sawdust and shavings, which are mixed with resin and wax and compressed into panels. It is not fond of water as this can make the board swell. So it needs to be treated - or primed or sealed - before you consider painting it.
