Not only one of the best interpretations of an American pale ale, but also one of the most iconic beers in history, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is quite simply the perfect pale ale. Germany’s 1,500 breweries, he says, now produce between 400 to 500 alcohol-free varieties of beer, with new ones emerging all the time as the brands compete to improve taste, head and consistency. Merlin’s Muddle is their strongest ale at 5.2% and has a dark and full-bodied flavour. Like many Cornish breweries, many of their ale names are based on Cornish myths and legends, such as Castle Gold and Arthur’s Ale. Their extensive range of award-winning beverages covers everything from pale ale and Cornish lager, to bitter, stout and red ale. St Austell Brewery ales and beers dominate many of the pubs in Cornwall, so you won’t have to go far to find some! Try cutting through, complementing, and contrasting flavours too. For example, you could try a sharp citrussy beer with oily sardines, or a sweeter beer with salty halloumi.

Timeless might be the perfect word to describe Daisy Cutter, making it a must-try, especially since you can most likely find this beer at a store close to you.

Offshore Pilsner

Although newer to the market, Haze Charmer has already charmed many people. In fact, this beer won “Best of the Mid-Atlantic Pale Ale” at the 2020 U.S. Beer Tasting Championship. In late 1980, Sierra Nevada Founder Ken Grossman set out to make a beer that showcased his love of one particular Pacific Northwest hop: Cascade.

According to the German Association of Brewers (DBB), now as many as one in 15 beers of the estimated annual 6.2 million hectolitres consumed in Germany contains no alcohol. This is being put down to an increase in health awareness as well as an improvement in the quality of a beverage with a reputation for being flat and tasteless, typically drunk only out of necessity. Even the best beers can fall flat in the wrong environment. Follow these tips from our beer experts to keep yours in top condition:Store your beer in a cool, dark place, especially in summer. Exposure to UV light will break down the compounds in the hops, which become ‘off’ flavours. Cornwall has a great reputation for producing some of the best ales in the country. Many of our local Cornish ales can be found in pubs and supermarkets across the UK. Too-cold temperatures can mute the flavours, so it’s worth taking beer out of the fridge in advance to warm up a little before serving. Pale ales and IPAs are at their best at 7-10°C, and for traditional British ales it's 10-13°C.

Skinner’s Brewery Their hand-brewed ales play tribute to the Celtic heritage of Cornwall and the names of their ales are based on the legend of King Arthur. According to legend, King Arthur was born at Tintagel Castle. Citrus, mango, and grapefruit ferociously roar in this pale ale, finishing with a bright, clean bite. What truly sets Atlantic Pale Ale apart from its contemporaries is its exceptional balance and drinkability. It pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, from fresh seafood to hearty pub classics. Its distinct character and undeniable charm make it the perfect choice for any gathering, whether you're sharing tales of adventure with fellow seafarers or simply enjoying a quiet pint at your favourite coastal retreat. Tintagel Brewery is located on the highest farm in Cornwall, in a former milking parlour. They use pure water from their spring, rising 852 feet above the sea at Trebarwith Strand, and their very own wind turbine, to produce their classic real ales. When we use the words Dogfish Head and beer in the same sentence, it’s usually followed by something like 60 Minute IPA, 90 Minute IPA, SeaQuench Ale, Punkin Ale, or Namaste. Very few times have we actually seen Dogfish Head’s Shelter Pale Ale mentioned. The signature hop gave Pale Ale distinctive aromas and flavors of pine and citrus and helped turn the beer into a sort of stepping stone to the American and West Coast IPAs to come. And we can taste why. 420 Extra Pale Ale is almost an homage to Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. With the dial cranked a little harder, yet not hard enough to make this beer a straight-up West Coast IPA, this one falls into its own unique stratosphere of pale ales. If you’re looking for something to serve alongside grilled meat such as burgers, ribs, or other fatty meat dishes, our experts recommend choosing a bitter, malt-driven beer that cuts through the fat, such as a West Coast-style IPA. Lagers like pilsners, which are bubbly and bitter, also do a good job of cutting through fat and salt. Consequently, the beer has continued to be a trendsetter for a reason. Daisy Cutter teeters expertly between that see-saw of bitter and juicy; hop heads will be satisfied while juice giants will appreciate the slight bitterness too.
