AS: When did you start with design phase of the Lintons and have you already been influenced by the return of Vinyl into the audio-culture of the 21st Century then? However, in stereo, it was very difficult to make out any big difference in them. This could be down to the time it took to switch between them while playing different songs. In my room, using the it in lull length, the Linton 85’s sound best with one port closed. If the extra bass extension causes room resonances to get triggered, try the 85’s with both ports closed. With an Fc of 46Hz. there will still be plenty of extension left 😉 I think that we may have found a flaw in the system. A recent dinner vinyl party night with friends the 6000A started to cut out after a few hours of playing at a moderately loud level of -10. Most of those 2 hours was at -18, when we tried to increase the level the system cut out. I touched the top, thinking that it may be an overheating issue but found it only slightly warm. Comeau has a clear preference in cabinet materials. "Personally, I'm a fan of high-density chipboard for cabinets and pioneered, for Wharfedale, the sandwich of chipboard with MDF skins that we now use. I have a raft of technical research which shows the superiority of chipboard over MDF."

With effortless weight, spot-on stereo imaging and layer upon layer of marvellous detail, you could listen to these speakers for days and still not get tired. Just remember to change the record once in a while. In room with some basic eq on each channel (via RME ADI-2 pro). Can always use it's bass control to lift it a bit. Wharfedale manufactures every piece of the Linton Heritage, including bolts and capacitors, in its 1.5 million-square-foot factory in Jiangxi Province, China. (Wharfedale's parent company, International Audio Group, is based in Shenzhen, China.) All design work takes place in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, UK, where Wharfedale maintains a 50-person research and development team. our measurements show the grille is acoustically transparent and makes little difference to the sound balance, unlike the Denton 85th Anniversary Edition; Wharfedale seem to be in two minds about all this. My main aim was to see if the Lintons treble and bass extension was similar to the Stereophile or the German measurements, which seemed a bit different. Also to see how they fared in my large room (at least 8m x 12m) compared with the D2s. The D2s have a bit of an uneven upper mid/treble in my room and bass is OK but you do need a sub. Here we go! Position and toe in as per above room photo for Lintons. Note I used tweeters on the outside to give better treble off axis for a couch on the side rather than my listening position. Most of you may have already read this review about the 6000CDT, and while I found it fun and entertaining to read, it can't hide the air of product marketing. Personally, I perceived the CDT’s sound signature in my listening scenario as well tempered or "balanced", an adjective we can hear/see often in the context of Audiolabs tonal presentation and as well the characterization we have heard from Dave about the Linton Heritage speaker. But no big deal, since grille-on was how it was done in the past, for reasons you will understand if you look at the old Wharfedale Linton XP3 with grille off – using the modern fangled internet. Not a pretty sight, even if that white Leak midrange unit, designed by Alex Garner (Leak/Wharfedale, then Tannoy) was a wondrous device even by modern standards, with damped layer plastic cone and wave breaks. Looking at Linton, it becomes immediately clear that there's no expiration date on vintage style. The same can be said about superior sound, which you'll also find Linton offers with abundance. 100% Music Direct Guaranteed. Stay at tweeter level. If you go even 10° above or below the tweeter level, the timbre of the speaker is noticeably different and worse. With retro good looks and a natural, relaxed sound to match, these Wharfedales are different, but undeniably superb.” ’What Hi-Fi?’ – 5 Star review.

Sometimes the screen would go blank, sometimes RPT would show, and on other occasions it would switch from Phono to OP1.

Thank You!

Wharfedale, from Huntington (without Beach) in the English Cambridgeshire, half way between Cambridge and Peterborough, a neighborhood that has given birth to Oliver Cromwell and John Major, is a manufacturer with a long standing tradition that - like many other well-known companies defining the British Sound signature - was taken over by a foreign industry group in 1997. New models were designed, the production was relocated and a successful fresh start was initiated. I played a bunch of songs I am familiar with and listened both directly on-axis as well as in my seating position. Early Reflections Directivity Index (EPDI): is defined as the difference between the listening window curve and the early reflections curve. In small rooms, early reflections figure prominently in what is measured and heard in the room so this curve may provide insights into potential sound quality. Dave: The PS Audio S300 was bought because I could tell the bass was tubby and the amps I was using couldn't drive the Linton's sufficiently. This is also a weakness of the speakers to me, also . As an engineer and speaker freak I decided to do some measurements regarding the tuning of the reflex system:

AS: Did you buy these speakers because you were on the hunt for new transducers, or did they cross your way by chance? Wharfedale’s Linton 85s are ideal speakers upon which to base truly affordable high-end audio systems. In fact, they are so good that for many listeners they will serve not only as a high-end audio starting point, but also as a wonderful end-destination. That night I tried the system at various volume levels, -20, -15, -10, -8, -2, +2, +5, +8. I have never played the system at these levels, too loud, the system did not cut out. It played, though there was some distortion at the higher levels.

Jan Ertner: In terms of the actual CD drive and its ability to read discs, the signal integrity and the low jitter performance of the SPDIF output, the 6000CDT can very much be thought of as a 8300CD without the DAC. The On-axis Frequency Response (0°) is the universal starting point and in many situations it is a fair representation of the first sound to arrive at a listener’s ears. In general if you have space you don't want to constrain yourself into a desktop setup, you will avoid acoustic interferences of the desk. From the photo you sent, you have room to put a sofa in the middle of the room (don't you want to have a relaxing option? ) and put the desk behind the sofa, and then the speakers a bit far away. In this way you can set a loudspeaker position that is good for both listening places at once. Dave: For me it is the tonal balance and midrange that work well. I am not a believer of long speaker break-in.

gated comparison. Note Linton on lower stand so gating is 3.3ms vs 5ms for D2. Linton quite flat, slight rolloff, not as bad as Stereophile. D2 gentle lift and tweeter resonance, similar to Stereophile. The original Denton was well known for its warm, rich and natural sounding character and the 85th Anniversary Edition retains that character but imbues it with an open, detailed performance that will entice you to explore your whole music collection. My conclusion, the 6000A with the inbuilt streamer is unable to reduce internal heat fast enough during long long hours of playing.Peter Cormeau: Every product design starts out with the premise: ‘how can we meet customer demands and fit those requirements with a product that delivers long-lasting musical satisfaction?’. In that way, it doesn’t matter what the cost of the product is, only in that it determines the cost of the materials we can use. Obviously higher-priced loudspeakers enable us to push the boundaries of what is possible with current technologies, but there is also a surprising amount we can do with the production methods we develop and use for affordable products too. So I’m going to tell you to buy new speakers, right? Nope. You have the original Kappas. Those were better. You have better drivers than I did- you’ve got EMITs- Infiinity speak for their diaphragm tweeter drivers. Those are quite special. If something goes wrong, you can still have them rebuilt. The parts are inexpensive and easily sourced. Same with woofer surrounds. The midrange is no longer available, but they rarely fail. Their other weapon in keeping a low profile is the dedicated Linton stands, which sit the speakers at a slightly shorter height than some. Short enough, in fact, that those with a lower than average seating position will be the ones who hear the Lintons at their best. I have attached some recordings of both speakers and 3 different songs I played. Of course, given that this is recorded on an iPhone, this isn't meant to capture the full sound signature, but the hope is you can compare the tonality somewhat for yourself and see if you think there is a difference.
