With gender roles at the forefront of The Witch Boy, I didn’t understand the clothing choices for the “mothers.” The men and boys wear face paint and run around shirtless in the middle of the night. Other (non-motherly, young) women and girls in the story wear modern clothing: tank tops, short skirts, jeans, overalls, and shorts. In 2021, an Ostertag graphic novel, The Girl From The Sea, was published. She described it as "teen summer romance graphic novel" set in Nova Scotia, focused on the story of a 15-year-old Korean Canadian girl named Morgan falling in love with a selkie named Keltie. [27] [a] She noted that it is somewhat based on her experience spending summers at Wilneff Island in Nova Scotia as a kid and called the book her "first serious foray" into the romance genre. The Girl from the Sea has been nominated for the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Original Graphic Novel/Anthology. [28]

Of course, this is a small issue that did not take away from my enjoyment of the novel. I imagine most young readers will think nothing of it. But I did notice, and I wish the mothers were portrayed as a little more “modern” than they are. It seems the book both fights gender roles and plays into them at the same time. Deliberate Values Dissonance: Charlie is the only person who's openly cool with Aster being a witch, if only because as a Muggle, she has no frame of reference for what magical folk would consider "normal" or "proper". Furthermore, she has two fathers and chafes at the gender segregation of her school's sports, further compelling her to sympathize with Aster for being "different".Sandy Saito loves baseball, and the Vancouver Asahi ballplayers are his heroes. But when they lose in the 1941 semifinals, Sandy’s dad calls it a bad omen. Sure enough, in December 1941, Japan bombs Pearl Harbor in the U.S. The Canadian government begins to ban Japanese people from certain areas, moving them to “dormitories” and setting a curfew. Sandy wants to spend time with his father, but as a doctor, his dad is busy, often sneaking out past curfew to work. One night Papa is taken to “where he [is] needed most,” and the family is forced into an internment camp. Life at the camp isn’t easy, and even with some of the Asahi players playing ball there, it just isn’t the same. Trying to understand and find joy again, Sandy struggles with his new reality and relationship with his father. Based on the true experiences of Japanese Canadians and the Vancouver Asahi team, this graphic novel is a glimpse of how their lives were affected by WWII. The end is a bit abrupt, but it’s still an inspiring and sweet look at how baseball helped them through hardship. The illustrations are all in a sepia tone, giving it an antique look and conveying the emotions and struggles. None of the illustrations of their experiences are overly graphic, making it a good introduction to this upsetting topic for middle-grade readers.
