About this deal

The 7-day weather memory uses the current sea-level pressure as a base mark and records the last 24 hours (in 30-minute intervals) to give a detailed run down of how the pressure is changing. Should pressure drop suddenly and dramatically, indicating bad weather, the Suunto Core also features a Storm Alarm to ensure you are alerted to the situation. However, despite its average case size, the Suunto Core is pretty darn light, tipping the scales at just 2.26oz (64g). Other outdoor watches that contain significantly more metal will weigh upwards of 3.15oz (90g). This might not sound a lot, but when you think about how often you move your arm during the day, every gram counts. The Suunto Core has a clean and straightforward digital display, with a dark aesthetic that can go well with any style or outfit. Its interface is very user-friendly, with a large screen that bears pronounced letters and numerals for better legibility. Its different modes and functions are also all clearly labelled, which makes it easier to navigate this watch. One weakness of the Suunto Core, however, is that the layer of mineral glass used to protect the digital dial is quite reflective. As a result, when the watch is exposed to high-intensity light, this can cause light glares that distort the watch face and make it harder to read. Unlike both Pathfinder models and the Vector, the Core has the altimeter and barometer functions linked together. It measures elevation in three-foot or one-meter intervals compared with the Pathfinder 20 feet or 5 meters and the Vector's 10 feet or 3 meters. The altimeter/barometer feature is sweet. It calculates long-term pressure trends to give you a more accurate reading. For example, when you are ascending it gains with you as the barometric pressure changes at a rate far faster than the barometric pressure changes with the weather. Once you stop gaining elevation for a while (i.e. sleeping) it realizes that and sees any barometer pressure changes as what they are and not elevation gain. This is a pretty cool and fairly effective feature; it works sometimes but not always in our real world tests. It had the second most accurate altimeter only every so slightly behind the much more expensive Ambit2.

Lastly, the compass mode is a quite straightforward function that allows the use of the timepiece as a digital compass. One of the unique features of this watch is its storm alarm. It gets activated by a rapid drop in air pressure. Once the alarm is activated, it provides a light and sound warning. The watch is also equipped with a compass. The Suunto Core is a fully-featured altimeter watch that warrants a full, in-depth review. Here’s what we found when we tested it out over three years: Case Size, Shape, and Fit By keeping an eye on weather systems and local conditions, the Suunto Core keeps you ahead of the game. To allow detailed information on air pressure and therefore probable weather, the Suunto Core features an in-built barometer. Altimeter watches are notoriously inaccurate unless they’re calibrated frequently. However, we found that the Core only really had accuracy issues when it was used in altimeter mode as opposed to barometer mode.

The watch can be set either manually to measure the altitude, the barometric pressure or the depth, or it can be set to pass from one function to another autonomously. In this mode, you can also choose the Depth Meter function. In this case, the watch will display both the current and the maximum depth you have reached (up to 30 feet) during diving. Compass Mode This Luminox Bear Grylls watch comes with functions including a countdown time zone, compass, walking speed calculator, and more. Driven by a RONDA 5021.D movement, this watch has a 50-month battery life and an impressive 200-metre depth rating, which far surpasses what the Suunto Core offers.

In fact, on the contrary of the satellite detection, the altitude detection is a more useful feature, as it works without any problems in any area, including those affected by signal stability problems and low coverage. This outdoor watch tells you when a blast is coming with the storm alarm, with this you can make the most accurate decision on your way. In addition, you have an altimeter, barometer, thermometer, digital compass and barometric trend indicator. The pressure sensor works in four modes. The Suunto Core has an automatic alti-baro mode that detects movements or absence of movements, and changes accordingly. This Pro-Trek watch is also powered by a solar quartz movement with a rechargeable battery. Despite its name, this battery can actually be charged by any light source, including artificial light, and not just solar power. When fully charged, this battery can last up to an impressive five months. If you are looking for a more high-end outdoor watch, then this Garmin MARQ Captain Modern Tool Ref. 010-02006-07 is the right one for you. This timepiece is designed as a modern all-rounder tool for individuals with active lifestyles. It comes with an altimeter, barometer, a three-axis electronic compass, a functional GPS for easy navigation, and even a regatta function for those who enjoy yachting. This Garmin watch comes in a 46mm lightweight titanium case, with a handsome blue ceramic bezel and a matching blue textile strap.Suunto Core features the brand's ABC – altimeter, barometer and compass. It is excellent for outdoor adventurers and travellers because of the numerous useful and accurate survival functionalities. At the end of the day, the Suunto Core is a solid all-around performer in the outdoor watch world. Although it’s a bit pricey, it truly proves its worth, thanks to its versatility, functionality, and durability. We find pretty much all of the Core’s features to be useful and it’s a stylish altimeter watch that is reliable enough to get the job done. What more could you want? Given the current penchant for smartphone GPS apps such as RunKeeper and Nike+ Running that record exactly where you've been on a run, the Suunto Core's habit of logging your altitude gains and losses - and displaying them on a graph - will likely appeal to most users. It works for seven days, which should cover a week's worth of skiing, walking or mountain ascents.

This Garmin MARQ watch is also equipped with an array of smart functions. These include a heart monitoring app, a hydration detection function, wireless connectivity to Bluetooth and Wifi, and ClimbPro, an app that gives you instant data on the climbs and gradients that await you on your route. All of these can be viewed on the watch’s colourful digital dial, which showcases legible numerals in red and blue hues along with blunt white hands for the time display. That said, there are some downsides to the Suunto Core, especially for those who frequently engage in water sports. If so, take a second look at the alternative timepieces we have listed above, all of which are top-tier outdoor watches in their own right. Each and every model certainly deserves a spot in your collection. When you set your location, the watch provides information about remaining daylight time so that you can plan a trip. Once submerged under water, this timepiece can measure depth up to 10 metres.Daily functions include dual time, date, alarm, sports chronograph and predicted times for sunrise and sunset The Core has three alarms, which is the same as the Suunto Ambit2 and the Suunto Vector and less than both the Casio Pathfinder PAG240-1 and the Pathfinder PAG240T-7, which have five. Besides having less alarms, what we thought was the bigger deal was the Suunto alarms weren't very loud and we had to put the watch close to our head to make sure they woke us up. The Core has a stopwatch and a timer and during either of these functions, you can see the current time and whatever your stopwatch/timer is measuring. Altimeter and Barometer Elsewhere, there are three alarms (to let you know when you've ascended, say, 100m), a stopwatch and a timer, as well as a thermometer. As you set the watch up, if you tell it where you are it will show sunrise and sunset times, too. Verdict
