Byron’s rise to fame coincided with mass mechanised publishing. This meant that many people were able to read his poetry, but also that unscrupulous publishers were able easily to steal Byron’s work without his permission. 7. Byron was the inspiration for the first vampire novel Fiennes mentions that he mostly makes a living out of writing books and public speaking based on all his expeditions. So listening to the biography made me feel a bit cheated in that I'm just fuelling another expedition. I'm going to be honest: I went into this knowing next to nothing about it, so imagine my delight when I realized it was about a French-American Muslim girl set in Paris on an art history sleuthing mission mixed with poetry and philosophy. Like, this hit the nail on the head for what I like, and honestly, I was hooked. Two hundred years before Khayyam’s summer of discontent, Leila is struggling to survive and keep her true love hidden from the Pasha who has “gifted” her with favored status in his harem. In the present day—and with the company of a descendant of Alexandre Dumas—Khayyam begins to connect allusions to an enigmatic 19th-century Muslim woman whose path may have intersected with Alexandre Dumas, Eugène Delacroix, and Lord Byron. The two women’s stories are told in a way that amplifies both of their voices into something unforgettable.”

San Diego, CA: Zoological Society of San Diego; 2001:60–71. This woman who had been talked about never got the opportunity to speak for herself. Her name was Leila and her story matters. In learning about Leila, Khayyam’s initial goal to rewrite her essay and prove her case grows distant. She’s no longer focused on her future, but resurrecting Leila’s past is imperative. Mad, Bad & Dangerous to Know is led by Khayyam, a seventeen-year-old teen soon going on eighteen. She encompasses a range of identities; "living between spaces", as she puts it: French American; Indian American; Muslim American. In the book, her French, American and Muslim identities are most apparent, and Ahmed's own personal experiences shine through. The most moving chapter recounts the death of Fiennes's first wife and childhood sweetheart Ginny, who accompanied him on adventures and, in between, stoked the fires and raised an organic beef herd at their "dream home" on Exmoor. To an extent, the book is a hymn to her. "Without Ginny, there would be no point to my life," Fiennes writes early on, adding later: "I cannot believe that any human being has ever loved another as much as I loved and still love Ginny." A second wife, and late baby, are barely mentioned, and do not appear on the family tree at the end of the book. Barrymore took years dying, stalling his exit,” Flynn writes. When he finally did pass away in 1942, Flynn claims that director Raoul Walsh bribed the undertaker to let him take Barrymore’s body on a little trip, to Flynn’s favorite chair at Mulholland House. “As I opened the door I pressed the button,” Flynn recalls. “The lights went on and my God—I stared into the face of Barrymore! His eyes were closed. He looked puffed, white, bloodless…. I let out a delirious scream.” Flynnanigans Ahmed’s brilliant novel shows that the familiar journey of being smart, in love, and a little lost is as profound now as it was in the 19th century. Add in a romance in the hidden gardens of Paris and an explosive trove of lost historical letters from a womanalmost forgottenand you’ve got a fresh, thoughtful joyride that you’ll want to read with everywoman and girlyou know.”Forbey JS, Harvey AL, Huffman MA, Provenza FD, Sullivan R, Tasdemir D: Exploitation of secondary metabolites by animals: A response to homeostatic challenges. I thought Khayyam was well-crafted and she was definitely a fun character to follow through all of her adventures in Paris. I also really appreciated her love for history and thought that was written really well. Lady Caroline Lamb was noted to have been involved in a few different literary circles that met in the Holland House, Lady Charleville's, Lord Ward's, Lord Lansdowne's and others of similar repute. [17] While RF doesn't seem the type to talk about his feelings, more description about his internal challenges and interaction with his teams would've given the book a better flow. His story had an interesting work / life split. I think his jargon-laden chapter on fighting the Arabs was potentially longer than his comments on his relationships with Ginny, Louise and Elizabeth combined.
