Beginning with the smallest form, the dragon feels short and stubby, with a head that is not proportionately sized to the rest of its body. Thankfully, this can soon be fixed by progressing to the next stage of its evolution, with a single piece extending the body being enough to make this creature seem suitably sized. Add to that a longer tail and a small pair of wings, and while this dragon might not be flying just yet, it’s a lot more intimidating.

No batteries are needed for this LEGO® NINJAGO® dragon – it’s can be played with right out of the box. The dragon toy figure is powered by kids’ imaginations, so the quest to protect the Sword of Fire never has to stop. But look at the underside of the dragon. Surely LEGO could have done a little more here to smooth things out, particularly for a dragon likely to be seen from this angle. I guess being very flat makes it feel streamlined? Here’s a look at Kai’s Ninjago Core outfit, which also has the same Yukata-inspired design. You also get Kai’s hairpiece, and a sweet red Katana. Seen side-by-side with the Thunder Dragon, you can see that the Fire Dragon is at a higher price-point judging by the bulkier feel and bigger wings. Will the allure of a flaming red dragon wins the hearts of unconvinced six-year-olds? Will it tempt the possibly more important demographic of their elders who will likely be paying for the LEGO set? I’m not really qualified to answer either of those questions, but it seems like a pretty safe bet to me.
