Description

In this article, I will briefly review this camera and help you understand whether it’s worth your time and money. I will also explain how to get the best out of your Polaroid SX-70 .

Der Film zeigt seine Stärken insbesondere bei Portraits und allgemein Nahaufnahmen (Also quasi ohnehin DER Grund schlechthin weshalb man überhaupt eine SX-70 haben möchte, manueller Fokus ist super) Let’s get this straight right off the bat; the real SX-70 film was in another universe from today’s in terms of vibrancy, consistency, longevity; the works. You could (and I did) exhibit and sell these Polaroids as works of art. I breathed in the earthy smell of leather and dust, the SX70 pressed to my face as I focused the split-image mechanism, heard the heavy slap of the reflex mirror, the metallic shwink as the shutter released, the raucous noise and vibration as the motors sprung to life and squeezed the instant print through the tightly spaced rollers. In 1972 there was no camera like it in the world, and there still isn’t. And if not for one gigantic problem, the SX70 might be my favorite camera of all time. In terms of sharpness, there is no visible difference between SX-70 and 600 film after accounting for image shake. Is SX-70 film sharper than Polaroid 600?

Both Polaroid SX-70 and 600 film types have the same size, and overall sharpness after accounting for motion blur. The only major difference between the two film types is that the faster 600 film has better dynamic range, and is more prone to green casts in shadows than SX-70. Sean O'Hagan (5 April 2010). Polaroid Originals photo dimensions". Polaroid Originals (Impossible Proj.) . Retrieved 19 March 2019. Up until recently, the SX-70 lens would make the absolute best of Polaroid film. It was by far the sharpest lens for the medium (all other new / vintage Polaroid cameras use plastic lenses with imprecise autofocus). But the new Polaroid I-2 had finally de-throned it with its modern plastic continuous autofocus optics. Still, the SX-70 remains the only instant film camera for the format with glass optics . Instax film can be advantageous with its seemingly better dynamic range and colour accuracy. Instax Wide is larger by area than the typical Polaroid film. New cameras for this format come out every year, including adapters and methods to shoot it with medium and large format cameras. a b Gustavson, Todd (2009). Camera A history of photography from Daguerreotype to Digital. Sterling Signature. ISBN 978-1-4027-5656-6. Die restlichen 1% liegen nicht an der Kamera oder am Film, sondern an euch, dem Fotograf. ISO160 und Blende 10 ist halt nicht immer optimal, da muss man lernen zu kompensieren oder notfalls zu einer anderen Polaroid-Kamera zu greifen mit integriertem Blitz. Oder einen Blitzadapter kaufen für die SX-70! ;-)This is really fantastic when you’re wanting that perfectly centered image. This is also super helpful if you’re trying to do experimental things with your images, like adding prisms or other accessories in front of the lens for creative effects like what Julia Beyer has shown us in this SIWF article. The Sonar Model

Instant film with classic White frame/ Format: length 3. 4” × height 4. 25”/ image area: Length 3. 1” × height 3. 1” The Polaroid 600 film captures more dynamic range than SX-70 film, despite being 2.5x stops higher ISO. You can really see it in the hair and in the areas where the shadows fall off on the model’s image above. Polaroid 600 film has a much smoother transition and does capture more shadow detail than SX-70 film is capable of. Dynamic range is the place where Polaroid film struggles the most. Dynamic range is the amount of detail that a photographic medium captures in the highlights and shadows. Humans can see about 21 stops of dynamic range, top-end digital cameras capture about 16, negative film around 8-12, but Polaroid film only captures 5 or 6. Do Polaroid cameras need specific film? Polaroid cameras that use the different types of Polaroid film. Polaroid Now+, Polaroid 600, Polaroid SX-70, and Polaroid Go SX-70s feature exceptional design. Yes, it's SUPPOSED to be quoted in line pairs. As you say, after all, there has to be a contrast between lines. However, both film and lens makers started just saying lines so they could double the public perception of their film and lenses. If both Brand X and Y are 50/lpmm, and Brand X decides to overstate their specs by saying it resolves 100 lines, Brand Y is going to see that as unfair competition and also advertise 100 lines. That's how standards become meaningless. As of 20-30 years ago, the figure quoted for the same film would be stated as both lines and line pairs. In a situation I'm thinking of, the film would actually meet the line pairs spec so they weren't cheating but also maybe got negatively compared by people who were. Könnte bei Landschaftsaufnahmen gut etwas mehr "Pep" vertragen, die wirken ehrlich gesagt etwas mau verglichen mit Instax. Perhaps the most sought-after quality of the Polaroid SX-70 lens is the bokeh that you can get with it — especially when photographing at short focus distances in the shade with no flash and a steady hand (or a tripod). Photos develop in 10-15 minutes/ All photos appear blank at first. They’re most sensitive during this time, so don’t bend or shake them. Shield them from the light and place them face down as they develop. Keep color shielded from light for about 6 minutes.

The lenses on those do leave something to be desired compared to higher end cameras, but at least you have a split image to help with focus and also a decent amount of contrast on the screen to see whether or not it's in focus. But in terms of sharpness and image quality, is there a big difference between the ISO 100 Polaroid SX-70 film and Polaroid 600? Here’s what I found after doing a side-by-side comparison with two SX-70 cameras, one an unmodded Sonar version, and the other a MiNT SLR 670-X. Another significant point of interest is which film has the best color rendition. And here, the SX-70 wins.

Manual focus

If you’d like to get your hands on one of these incredible machines, there are a few ways to do so and some things to keep in mind. These cameras are old, and unfortunately susceptible to breakdowns. That’s why it’s important to do your research before pulling the trigger on a sale.
