About this deal

We all often encounter these beautiful birds in day to day life. Now that we learnt different and popular varieties of pigeons across the globe let us unwind some interesting, and unknown facts about them.

William Mason settled in the north west of Ireland in the early years of the twentieth century after leaving his native Scotland. Prior to his state of exile Mason had along with his brother raced pigeons and the latter was the one and only founder of the '1210' strain- Alexander Mason. (Mason's 1210 strain appears in the pedigrees of some of the greatest Scottish and British winning pigeons). Upon his arrival in Ireland William Mason established a loft based upon the best of the '1210' strain and began achieving outstanding results on the difficult north west route.

Later, in 1100 BC, King Rameses III sacrificed 57,000 pigeons to the god Ammon at Thebes, confirming that the pigeon was well on the way to being domesticated not only for food but also for religious purposes. Mention of pigeon sacrifices can also be found in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. French Pigeon Corps, WW1 Estimates of British pigeons lost in the First Great War vary, but at least 100,000 birds are thought to have lost their lives in military service. Dovecote Interior Pigeons would enter the dovecote in a variety of different ways, depending on the size, shape and type of structure, with the most common entry/exit point (known as the flight entrance) being provided beneath a cupola or ‘lantern’ on the roof of the structure. The birds would be encouraged to roost and breed within the structure, and as pigeons are quite prolific breeders, bringing up to 8 young into the world each year, competition for breeding cubicles within the cote would be high. During the increased effort of feeding young pigeons, it also supply feeding pigeons and their young pigeons with the necessary minerals and electrolytes, helping to maintain the optimal condition of the birds.

Pigeons can fly between 600 and 700 miles in a single day, with the longest recorded flight in the 19th century taking 55 days between Africa and England and covering 7000 miles On the first stand – two driven targets – I missed all six. I was worried as I am usually good at driven clays. I went on to another stand, considered by many to be challenging because of the fast quartering-away clays. It has earned its place in shooting folklore for a reason, and gets the respect of even the most discerning shooter. The great handling, combined with the crisp, predictable trigger pulls made this gun a joy to shoot.

Pigeons are only herbivores. They are plant eaters, and diet mostly consists of fruits, seeds and small plants. Pigeons, like humans, can see in colour, but unlike humans they can also see ultraviolet light, a part of the spectrum that humans cannot see. As a result, pigeons are often used in search and rescue missions at sea because of this unique sense combined with excellent all-round vision Pigeons are thought to navigate by sensing the earth’s magnetic field and using the sun for direction. Other theories include the use of roads and even low frequency seismic waves to find their way home The Steelium Optimabore HP barrels are built on the familiar monobloc principle, and use Beretta’s Optima system with extended forcing cones to reduce recoil, and chromium-plated bores to ensure longevity. These barrels are extremely tough, and the 3in chamber of this gun will handle superior steel and magnum loads. Being named, Rennes Queen, she was one of only 12 birds in race time. This hen also took 18th Open from the same race point in 1949 beaten by her daughter, Northern Leader. The latter was 7th Open in a race where only twenty-five pigeons were timed.
