United States: TV news report from April 2008: a Texas mother is angry about the severity with which, she says, her 17-year-old son (seen in the film playing drums) was paddled at high school. This 10-second video clip gives a fleeting glimpse of an impromptu flogging by the Taliban of a (mostly hidden from view) woman in a Kabul street, 2001. Pakistan: woman receives unofficial Taliban flogging on the ground, Swat Valley, 2009 (also video clip) The messages often ask if I’m still writing new stories. The short answer is yes. But the long answer is more complicated, so rather than trying to type it out individually a dozen or more times (a task that takes so much mental energy I’ve already put off responding to anyone for much longer than I should), I wanted to post it here.
