Below is a list of the best loud car horn upgrades that are direct replacements and some of the loudest available. The Best Loud Car Horn Upgrades We always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer with regards to usage and installation. I have heard of this grounding problem with Stebel horns but it was not the case with our installation. Additionally, the horn gets exercised 2-3 times a week to let cagers know I’m right beside you so quit coming over into my lane. Installation can be a major issue, partially because the shape is very complex and doesn’t lend itself to mounting alternatives.

Apparently, the Nautilus can fail early, suddenly or unexpectedly after an indeterminate amount of time. As you can see from the image below, they do become fairly corroded overtime. This horn was replaced from a 20 year old vehicle and it took just a few minutes to switch over the part. There are a variety of car horns available from small to large and its just a matter of preference and whether the horn is compatible.

Owner Comments and Feedback

A new 12 gauge red wire should run from terminal 87 of the relay to the positive terminal of the Stebel horn.

But the loudest motorcycle horn in the world is useless if it can’t be trusted, and based on our experience with the Stebel Nautilus horns, we’d rather take a few less dB but have something that’s going to work when needed. Once everything is connected, test your connections with a multi-meter if you have one. If not, turn on the ignition and press the horn button. You will now have a 139 dB horn that sounds like a semi rig! Be careful how you use it now, since it will scare the bejesus out of innocent pedestrians!

Based on this and our experience with the other Stebel Nautilus we tried, we can only give this Nautilus a “Not Recommended”. If you don’t have the room to be able to do that then, yep, I’d go for something else. Given that I have been able to do that, however, I’ve been very pleased with the Stebel.” From “P.E.” (May 2013): “I’ve sold hundreds of Stebel horns over the past 4-5 years. As best as I can recall, I’ve replaced two units that were reported to be defective. I go to the beach a couple of times a week and on the way out stop by local car wash to rinse off salt and sand. Upon first washing after installing S horn, the horn quit working. At first I did not suspect the bike washing, but later determined that must be the problem-although I tried to be careful around the horn, I must have accidentally squirted those naked air ports with water. At 4.5 inches wide, 4.5 inches tall and 3 inches deep, there are not many places you can hide it It also weighs 1-1/4 pounds.

I would estimate the Stebel horn on the VFR has seen roughly 15,000 miles from sweltering summers to cold winters and wet spring/autumn days. I separated the compressor from the trumpet, and installed the compressor in front of the battery in an upright position. At first I tried blasting some WD40 through the air intake of the motor, this worked for a day or two, then I tried using some 5W40 engine oil that i had lying around that wasn’t needed and dropped a few drops in, this lasted a bit longer, so I tried a few more drops in until it failed again.

Please refer to LX-150: Installing a 12V power Outlet as well as LX150: Installing a Tiny Tach For instructions on removing the Horn Cover, Legshield liner, and all wiring. The two wires that are connected to your horn are normally attached with metal connectors that simply slide onto the horn. If it’s hard to remove these, you might need to press down on them to break any corrosion that might be holding them in place. Once you have them off, clean and replace them and then try to sound your horn again. The Stebel Nautilus is one of my personal favorite car horns and I have installed several over the years. It has a unique sound from the twin tone harmonized horn that outputs at 139 dB. At first glance I noticed the air ports on the S horn were not covered and were exposed to the outside of the engine. I compared it to my HD horn and found the HD horn had a chrome metal housing covering the air ports. I went ahead with the installation thinking nothing more of it.
