The USNV PVS-14A GEN III White Phosphor system is US Night Vision's most advanced monocular. The versatile Gen 3 USNV PVS-14A features new White Phosphor image tube technology as well as a manual gain control which allows the user to increase or decrease image tube brightness for greater image contrast in varying light conditions. The USNV PVS-14A uses an auto-gated Generation 3 image tube in a compact, high performance, mil-spec housing designed for multiple applications. The USNV PVS-14A can be hand-held, head-mounted, helmet-mounted and weapons mounted. Night Vision Monocular with accessories kit and hard carry case, powered by Photonis ECHO green or white phosphor tube (with FOM garanteed between 1600 and 2000) or ECHO+ is guaranteed to have a FOM of 2000+.
The PVS-14 is an entry-level Gen 3 night vision device. It is a single monocular that is extremely versatile and widely available. They are extremely popular compared to other night vision products. It comes with a 2-year warranty and a lot of accessories in the box. The price is fair and the quality is the same as more expensive units. You are not currently bankrupt, subject to an Individual Voluntary Agreement (IVA), or have any country Court Judgements (CCJs) The interface is simple and easy to operate. It is easy to sight in and has a very crisp laser when looking through the PVS-14.
The problem with weapon mounting…
If you’re coming to the PVS-14 from a Gen-1, or Gen-2 monocular the PVS-14 will likely feel like a huge step up. The unit we got our hands on is in new condition. I’ve discussed the PVS-14 with numerous service members. A number of the Soldiers and Marines I spoke with mentioned that US Military PVS-14s are often abused and damaged but remain in service. A PVS-14 with damaged housing, glass or tube is not going to perform as well as a properly maintained unit. There is a built-in illuminator on the PVS-14 that can be turned on and off. It is only good for very close range and can be used for simple tasks in complete darkness.

That evening I started function testing and my god, the clarity is second to none. It was easy to adjust and when you find your sweet spot there wont be anything you can't see in the dark. For those of you who are on the fence between green and white, trust me, if you can afford it, go white. It is so easy on the eyes and the well worth the investment. Gain control gives the user the ability to increase or decrease the tube gain. Under extremely dark conditions, gain control allows the user to adjust the gain upward, giving a brighter image. Under high light conditions, details can be washed out due to an excess of light. Lowering the system gain can allow those details to be better seen. Additional features of the PVS-14 include an infrared LED illuminator with both an ‘IR On’ LED indicator and a low battery indicator in the viewfinder.

Hopefully, you already have a ballistic helmet or a bump helmet. You can always buy a standalone strap mount but in my experience, these are no good. The ATPIAL-C is top of the line and very robust. It can be used with an optional tape switch for its operation. TRYBE offers a hand-selected unit which is also what I recommend for a little extra. It is well worth it. From the customer service side I was also very happy. Initially my unit was missing 1 optional accessory which customer service shipped out the same day and was in my hands within 2 business days. This can also save you money if you do have, or want to buy extra gear. Other night vision systems require you to buy an IR laser targeting device and a helmet with mounting systems.
Overall this night vision device will enable nighttime operations while providing night vision capabilities. The manual gain control, bright light cut-off, daylight filter, and a high-quality photocathode tube, gives the PVS-14 the ultimate edge. (especially for its price point) The PVS-14 Gen 4 night vision monocular is the standard-issue U.S. military night vision optic and used by special ops throughout the world. These units are of the highest quality in optics, design and functionality. It is unlikely that the PVS-14 will ever drop in price. Again all night vision is expensive but the PVS-14 is more affordable than other units.
The image quality provided by this unit stands out. The image quality is clear and the focus has good adjustment. The gain adjustment is a good feature that allows the unit to work well in various lighting conditions. The whole point of getting night vision is to gain the upper hand and have an unfair advantage in darkness. Complimenting the PVS-14 autogating feature is the inclusion of a manual gain control that permits the scope to be fine tuned to match prevailing conditions. Under brightly lit, full moon conditions for example, gain might be set to its minimum setting, while if the night skies were heavily overcast you would probably crank the gain control wide open.
