Step 1: First, if you’re going to be recording onto an SD card, make sure that you’ve formatted it with the P4. The lesson here is that even though there is a limiter, if you turn up the gain too high, you get a LOT of noise. It’s a trade-off between the safety of not distorting (when the limiter is on), and having a ton of noise. Here’s my full list of wins for the Zoom over the Tascam, followed by my list of features where the Tascam excels. PodTrak P4 Wins (vs the DR60Dii) Dimension-wise we’re looking at 112mm (W), 155mm (D), 47mm (H), so ever so slightly longer than the average pen. The Zoom PodTrak P4 is absolutely perfect for you if you want to record a podcast with multiple guests, or with a remote guest using either a phone or connecting via Skype or Zoom (the OTHER “Zoom”) on a computer.

Since you can turn up the input gain as high as you want, that means cranking up the noise from the mic/interface as well. There is a way to avoid this, which I’ll talk about below (after the super noisy audio sample). Can’t use USB mics Because my Focusrite Scarlett doesn’t really have enough “oomph” to power the RE20, I didn’t bother doing any samples of that mic through the Focusrite. The P4 has 70db of gain which is more than enough to power gain hungry microphones like the ElectroVoice RE320, Shure SM7b, or the Heil PR40. There is more than enough gain to use these microphones without an additional boost from a Cloudlifter, Fethead, or simply sound device. The PodTrak P4 is designed to be compact and portable. So you can record everywhere and anywhere. IntuitiveI recorded these sound samples with the Rode Procaster, Shure SM58, and Samson Q2Umics. No post-processing has been applied, so you’ll be able to hear the audio exactly as it was recorded. I also included a snippet of a phone call recording, where you’ll hear some riveting chat about sound blankets. Zoom PodTrak P4 Review: Summary Note: A low-cut filter is the same thing as a high pass filter. So if you are told to use a high pass filter you have it built into the Podtrak P4. What is a limiter?

Podcasting is mainly vocal recording and a low-cut filter can help as the frequencies filtered out are typically below the human voice range. As there are only four buttons you need to choose wisely because you can not change the sounds programmed into the sound pad in the middle of a recording. Can be used as a 2-input/2-output interface to record on a computer OR an Android or iOS mobile device (Apple Lightning to USB camera adapter required for iOS). This can be useful if you don’t already have a recording interface. The best thing to do is to try it out and see how it sounds in your recording environment. It shouldn’t hurt your recording although it can introduce some noise in certain situations. I tested both kinds of remote audio by having my wife, the lovely and talented Lisa Theriot, as a “guest.” Lisa’s dial-in test audio A lot of people currently use USB microphones to record podcasts. These mics can offer good quality at a much lower price than a standard microphone plugged into a recording interface. that makes them quite popular.
