Chakravarty, AK; Sarkar, T; Nakane, T; Kawahara, N; Masuda, K (2008). "New phenylethanoid glycosides from Bacopa monnieri". Chem Pharm Bull. 50 (12): 1616–1618. doi: 10.1248/cpb.50.1616. PMID 12499603.

Throughout the book, the characters refer to the children’s classic The Wind in the Willows. It was obviously a favourite of Elizabeth’s, it was published when she was eight, and The Herb of Grace has many parallels with the story. The twins pretend to be Mole and Rat, consider Ben to be badger, Tommy the boastful toad, and Caroline the Gaoler’s daughter. Ben’s first thoughts on seeing the river are to quote Rat ” Believe me my young friend, there is nothing,– absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” ( Grahame 1908 ).The twins see the wood as the Wild Wood from the story and when Sally takes them to the wood they tell her they are going ” deep in to the Place Beyond, where the fairy person with the horns is.” Before they have been as far as Ben’s special place “where the person is who plays the pipes” ( Goudge 1948 ) Sally describes Damerosehay as ” the house of the perfect eaves” all phrases from the “Willows” But has she borrowed more than this? Is the Cistercian monk a representation of the “Piper at the Gates of Dawn?” Both were healers having sympathy for trapped and hurt creatures, showing compassion for those less fortunate than themselves, both lived far from the haunts of man, both were the genus loci of the countryside.Rue is sometimes applied directly to the skin to treat arthritis, dislocations, sprains, injuries of the bone, swollen skin, earaches, toothaches, headaches, tumors, and warts; and as an insect repellent. I think that the cover of the version I borrowed from my sister (thanks, sister!) does the story an injustice. It made me think the entire tale was about this bloke named David, who was probably American. Once you’ve done that and found the island, you’ll see that it’s a giant maze - this is all for show. When you reach the top of the ladder to start the maze, make it become night and you’ll see a faint, glistening blue path to the left of the starting sign that looks like it’s made of stardust. Follow this path all the way to the left and you’ll find the individual who gives you the Proof. Although rue herb does have several potential benefits for your health, you need to exercise caution in using the herb in any of its forms. Because of its many potential side effects, we cannot recommend using the herb unless you are under expert medical supervision. There are so many other herbal remedies that offer the same benefits with far fewer risks. In the ancient Roman world, the naturalists Pedanius Dioscorides and Pliny the Elder recommended that rue be combined with the poisonous shrub oleander to be drunk as an antidote to venomous snake bites. Like many other herbal remedies, rue is an outstanding treatment for the skin. The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties found in the herb make it an excellent tonic for the skin in general.
