Rubin, Steve. "The War of the Worlds". Cinefantastique magazine, Volume 5, No. 4, 1977. A comprehensive "making of" retrospective and review of the film. a b c d e f Wiseman, Andreas (January 29, 2019). Retrieved June 27, 2019. a b "2011 National Film Registry More Than a Box of Chocolates." Library of Congress, December 28, 2011. Retrieved: January 11, 2015. The Asylum's 2005 direct-to-DVD H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds has mild references to the Pal version. The Martian's mouth has three tongues that closely resemble the three Martian fingers in the Pal film. The Asylum film has scenes of power outages after the aliens' arrival via meteorite-ships. As in the Pal film, refugees hide in the mountains, instead of hiding underground as in the Wells novel, and the protagonist actively tries to fight the aliens by biological means. [37] Because of that, Cruise is given more to do dramatically than per usual. He gets a few stunts and an action scene or two (because why wouldn't you take advantage of his talent) but it's much more about family than it is about anything else. In that regard, the film works most of the time. Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, father to both Rachel and Robbie. Not to intentionally quote another Cruise movie, but it's really (k)night and day with these kids. Dakota Fanning is perfectly cast as Rachel, a pre-teen who is terrified of the apocalyptic world she now lives in. However, I just couldn't get behind Justin Chatwin's performance and the character of Robbie. There were too many times in which I either felt the character was entirely unnecessary to the plot, or he kept the plot from moving forward in frustrating ways. Why does he all of a sudden feel the need to leave his family and join the Army's fight against the tripods? Makes no sense whatsoever.

Maybe one of of these days, Hollywood will stop taking scenes and portions of the novel and changing time and place then release a version that is wholly accurate to Well's apocalyptic thriller. Pal and Haskin incorporated Northrop color footage of a YB-49 test flight, originally used in Paramount's Popular Science theatrical shorts, to show the Flying Wing's takeoff and bomb run. It's interesting to note the latest movie outing with Tom Cruise depicts the Martian war machine remarkably similiar to the way Wells described it in his book. A lesser known made-for-TV movies descripes the aliens as Wells envisioned them. There is to date, no movie or series that follows the famous novel accurately--just the few little exceptions mentioned above. The series adheres faithfully to the 1953 movie as it premise. Location shooting took place in Corona, California, which stood in for the fictitious town of Linda Rosa. St. Brendan's Catholic Church, at 310 South Van Ness Avenue in Los Angeles, was the setting for the climactic scene in which a large group of desperate people gather to pray. The rolling hills and main thoroughfares of El Sereno, Los Angeles, were also used in the film. [5]

Emily's sight recovers as she hears the noise, then she calmly stares at a quadruped cyborg until it turns and walks away. Bill is intrigued by her connection to the cyborgs, others question it. Sacha discovers he has a connection to the cyborgs too–which cause him to briefly see a girl (Emily) he does not know. Jonathan, joined by Chloe and Sacha on the journey to the Channel and England, finds Sacha's behaviour very hard to understand, including Sacha's sudden interest in Emily, when he sees Jonathan's family photo. In London, the group of survivors make their way to the university lab where Bill and Tom try to gain information on the quadrupeds. They find the aliens know more about humans than they imagined possible. Emily clashes with her mother. Helen and Sarah take a gamble and end up in a precarious situation. Tom's birthday needs celebrating and everybody reconciles. Catherine and Mokrani's team return to the observatory, where they are surprised to find Sophia but none of the other soldiers. This is an interesting series and is updated--now the aliens are surviving by possessing human bodies and a scientific team including Martin and Richard Chavez are in hot pursuit. One of the episodes involves the infamous 1938 Orson Wells broadcast which the series leads you to believe was not a hoax and the team return to Grover's Mill when the aliens come to retrieve their hibernating brethren. The Original War of the Worlds movie is a Classic...one of the greats. Of course, I had to see what they came up with as a series. I never saw it on TV and I can see why it didn't last (2 seasons, but one 1 on DVD that I could find). But, I am a Sci-Fi fan and I love even the campy B rated stuff. And this is it!
