I loved the romance, Ai Mi has a way of writing that causes one to be affected by such words of sincere gratitude, and the ardor that I have for these characters is a thing of utter beauty. You might not expect a HEA. The way everything works out is happy. It showed the courage the kids had. They made the long journey and survived. It wasn't a thing that you could say for sure in the beginning. It's written in a time that Ireland was full of death. It's one of those times you learn about in Ireland and this book, though not educational, is good to read during that part of your education. She was just so worried all the time, and never seem to worry about the right things. It was almost depressing and made me dislike her. Marita was always fascinated by the Famine period in Irish history and read everything available on the subject. When she heard a radio report of an unmarked children's grave from the Famine period being found under a hawthorn tree, she decided to write her first book, Under the Hawthorn Tree.

The novel's failure could have been in the utter naivete of the author's story, an unrequited love like unto Romeo and Juliet, but so far short of the depth of story required to have significant emotional impact. A. Not a novel! But I have just finished a short story, A Good Woman, which is set during the Covid pandemic. The novel tells the story of three siblings, Mary Ellen (Eily), Michael and Margaret (Peggy) O'Driscoll, who live in a small cottage in their home district of Duneen. Ireland is in the height of The Great Hunger. Blight has destroyed the staple crop. Ten month old Bridget dies of famine fever and is buried under the hawthorn tree in the garden: in Irish mythology, the hawthorn is linked with the otherworld. It was first adapted for the stage in Canada in 2009 by Irish musician Mary Murphy Demers and director/ writer Mary Clarke and was staged in a small theatre in Vancouver. I went to Vancouver just before the show opened and we tweaked it slightly. The show had a large mixed cast of some professional but mostly amateur actors which worked brilliantly for the large crowd scenes and it enjoyed a sold-out run.

There is plenty of historical detail to discuss. Michael witnesses trailer loads of grain being transported to the coast under armed guard to be exported to England as desperate people try to break the guard to get some grain. Space in the workhouse might be available later in the day when others die but there is no food available for the hordes waiting outside. People dying in their cabins, preferring to die in peace than in a crowded workhouse. ?Neighbours not visiting anymore for fear of getting the fever and embarrassment from not having food. The long desperate queues for the soup kitchens. People’s bodies held together by rags. ?The imagery communicates the tragedy and seriousness of the situation yet in a way that isn’t too distressing for children. And if the author hoped to create a romantic tragedy, she only succeeded in that the character of Jingqui proves to be so selfish and uncaring of Old Third's genuine well-being, that the death-bed scene ends up a melodramatic screech of Jingqui's presence.

Three children taken to hospital following suspected stabbing in Dublin

Mary is such a strong woman, and I did not want her to be seen as a victim. I wanted to demonstrate her intelligence, resourcefulness and her determination to fight for her children. Pre-Famine Skibbereen was a prosperous town with a good number of dressmakers. I had a picture of Mary with a needle in her hand sewing, and immediately knew that this small item would make an enormous difference to the survival of the Sullivan family. Marita and her husband James have four children and they live in Stillorgan in County Dublin. She is a promoter of the arts and was the chairperson of Irish PEN. [7] [8] Works [ edit ]
