About this deal

We often hear of the horror of World War II, but not nearly enough--we so rarely shine that light against the most shadowy parts of history. Exploration of the internment camps, which served up sheer cruelty, is not something that is often spoken of. Many don't even know, fully, the extent of this fractured part of history--and that is completely devastating. This story, too, is devastating and stunning all at once--the way that Fukuda weaves these historical events together is as cold and smooth as you'd expect; poignant and thought-provoking. It's impossible to write about this book without potentially giving things away, so I've thrown in a spoiler warning.

I felt myself leave my physical body and become a free-floating consciousness, capable of observing everything around me. I saw my family gathered together around my body in the room where I’d fallen, all of them weeping. I was so upset to see them in such pain that I tried to call out to them. “Don’t worry, I am alive! Death doesn’t exist!” I said. But it was no use, because I didn’t have a voice anymore—they just couldn’t hear me. All I could do was project my thoughts to them. And then I began to drift away from them, like a helium balloon that someone let go of, and I floated way, way above them, into a darkness—a dense, peaceful darkness with beautiful, twinkling lights all around. I felt a strong feeling of calm and contentment wash over me. Sargent, Aryelle (November 14, 2014). "Stanley transformed". theadvocate.com.au . Retrieved November 18, 2014. That can be directly contributed to the terrific performances from the cast, and particularly Fassbender, Vikander, and Weisz. Fassbender brings so much power and gravitas to his roles, but I've never seen him so vulnerable. We saw a peek at the emotional weight he can bring to his characters in X-Men: Apocalypse last spring, but nothing can prepare you for his heartbreaking turn in this film.

I don't usually read historical fiction, but as soon as I saw the cover and read the description, I knew that I had to read this book. The internment of Japanese Americans in the United States of America during World War II was horrifying and unfair, but it (along with the Armenian Genocide and the Nanjing Massacre) is completely shadowed by the Nazi Holocaust. This may be an incorrect assumption, but most Americans may not even know of the Japanese Americans internment, Armenian Genocide, and the Nanjing Massacre until perhaps high school, but they have learned of the Holocaust in elementary or middle school. Yes, the Holocaust was still a terrible event that should have never happened, but I'm glad that author Andrew Fukuda also decided to inform readers of the mini-Holocaust that was happening in the United States, the alleged land of liberty and equality. I also really appreciate that the author's research on the events of the Japanese Americans internment (and also how Fukuda dated every chapter -- it makes the book so much more realistic!). I wish I could give this more than five stars, I really do. I just hope that when the author looks up at the night sky tonight to see the stars, she realises that the millions of twinkly stars in the sky still is nowhere near the amount of stars this books deserves, yet its close enough. I also love how Laura has parts in this book that shows scientific tests and results to show that what she does is legit and that it is also very likely that all of us have this capability/switch in our brains to enter the altered state.

Success!

The Light Between Oceans". Venice Film Festival. Archived from the original on August 28, 2016 . Retrieved August 30, 2016. As Tom and Isabel are about to have Lucy christened on the mainland, Tom sees a woman, Hannah Roennfeldt, kneeling in front of a grave bearing the names of Franz Johannes Roennfeldt and his baby daughter Grace Ellen, who were lost at sea on the day they found Lucy, 26 April 1923. Tom fears that Lucy may very well be Hannah's missing infant daughter. He writes anonymously to Hannah to tell her that her husband is dead but that her infant daughter is safe, loved and well cared for. D'Alessandro, Anthony (August 31, 2016). "Labor Day Box Office Offers Few Options With 'Morgan', 'Light Between Oceans' ". Deadline Hollywood. Alex is a bit of a loner and doesn't have any friends. Charlie, in essence, becomes his only friend. I liked the characters as well. There are 4 young women who are diverse and have their very own personalities. They're all strong female characters in their own way and I loved their friendship. Isaac, the male main character, was likeable too. He was quite different than the females but seemed like such a nice guy.

I truly hope that by sharing some of my life experiences, I can connect to others and help in some small way to show that even in the darkest of times, there is hope, light and most importantly, love.

Customer reviews

To find a novel as enjoyable as The Light Between Us is almost like a syzygy - it happens once every ten years. Khan’s ability to portray the trials of time travel and long lost love whilst simultaneously highlighting strong female friendships is a masterpiece in itself.
