Description

The Z cameras automatically apply a DX crop and everything looks great as you shoot; unlike with a DSLR, the DX image always fills the finder. Note: Be sure to copy the firmware to the root (top-most) directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory. Any camera and mount adapter firmware updates must be performed before the firmware for F mount lenses can be updated. Note that some of the “fully compatible” lenses may still require a firmware update before they work with the FTZ adapter without any issues. If you buy any of these lenses new, Tamron has likely already installed the most recent firmware, but if you’ve had the lens for years, you might need to send it off for an update (or use Tamron’s tap-in console). NIKON Z7 + TamronSP 90mm F/2.8 MACRO VC (Model F017) @ 90mm, ISO 160, 1/1000, f/6.3, manual focus due to partial incompatibility Tokina Brand Lenses

Users of the Z6II and other Z-series cameras released in or after November, 2020, should install this update if the camera displays a message prompting them to update the FTZ mount adapter firmware. If Nikon was smart, if they had a good electronic mount strategy from the start, they would have the manual compatibility with ancient lenses (that they have) and 100% compatibility with all of their electronic lenses. The fact that they have a mish mash of incomparable electronic mount lenses is completely due to their poor planning. Nikon could have complete electronic compatibility with all of their lenses, but they squandered that. If Nikon had done the electronic mount proper then all of your old electronic lenses would work just fine on new Z cameras. It’s also useful for plugging the remaining gaps in Nikon’s Z-mount lens line-up with F-mount substitutes. For example, there’s no native Z-mount compact telephoto zoom for full-frame cameras, nor a fairly inexpensive 105mm macro lens. F-mount lenses like the Nikon AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR and Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro fit the bill nicely, while the 125g weight and 70mm length of the FTZ don’t add much bulk. The native wide-angle lenses for the Z system are very strong so far, and you have a number of good options at your disposal. There are currently eight full-frame Nikon Z lenses which are 24mm and wider:

There are three white (< o>) manual focus indicators at the lower left of the finder, and the selected focus sensor turns from red to green when in focus, which works pretty well — but nowhere near as well as if Nikon actually designed the FTZ properly to autofocus. You will enjoy in-body image stabilization, a basic feature of the Nikon Z camera family, with any lens. If autofocus is supported you'll get the full five-axis correction, and manual focus lenses will benefit from three axes of compensation.

Compatibility

To perform the update, you will need the memory card used in the camera and a compatible card reader. Pay particular attention to the angle of incidence. The greater the angle, the more flexibility that lens designers have when creating a lens. For more on why this is true, see our article on camera lens mounts explained. You’ll notice that the Nikon Z mount has the greatest angle of incidence of any system. That’s why we were not especially surprised at Photography Life to see just how good Nikon’s Z lenses are; the lens designers are working with a very flexible starting point. It’s a safe bet that Nikon’s future Z lenses will continue to set high standards in image quality, weight, or both.

We’ll start with Nikon-brand lenses, most of which are at least partly compatible with the FTZ adapter. Here’s where they stand. The FTZ works with most, but not all, Nikkor lenses. If you use a modern AF-S lens, you'll have no problems. But some older, more esoteric lenses won't mount—Nikon has a guide that lists compatible lenses if you have any questions about a specific optic.

APO 800mm F5.6 EX DG HSM ( Of this lens,Sigma says “it is difficult to achieve sufficient focusing accuracy” and “please use manual focus.”) Superior dust- and drip-resistant capability 4, high reliability that comes from both robustness and weather resistance, and excellent anti-fouling performance via the employment of fluorine coat. While there may be some mechanical interference with some lenses that prevent them from mounting on the adapter, if you safely can attach an ancient pre-AI lens, it works exactly the same as the manual focus AI converted, AI, AI‑s& Series E Lenses above.
