In the 12th century, animal gargoyles, sculpted as pigs and dogs, served not only as waterspouts but also as symbolic protections for Cathedrale Saint-Lazare d’Autun.

Derived from the Old French word gargouille which means “throat” or “gullet”, the term gargoyle refers to the sound produced when holding water in the mouth or throat while streaming air from the lungs (origin of gargle). White Rose Maths (the scheme of learning we use at DPS) have linked with the Government and the BBC to deliver a daily Maths lesson of 20-30 minutes, which will each week, teach the essential objectives remaining in Year 5 and ensure children are ready to start Year 6 in September.Recently I've been getting stationed in children's at work. On slower nights I try to familiarize myself with newer picture books...and end up going down nostalgia lane with books I adored as a young child and then lost to time and memory. This one was read to us when I was in primary school during library time, and I fell in love with it's grey-scale images, the way that the city was alight and alive even during the night, the way that artificial light and moonlight blended with the dark and shadow to make the night even more vibrant than the day. The impish creatures that I knew as a child (I KNEW) would come to life at night---then I forgot the title...the author, and eventually, the book altogether. Man with foliage. Celts believed that those branches protruding from a gargoyle’s mouth or crowning a gargoyle’s head served as a sign of divinity.

Inspired by the architectural element, gargoyles are stone-like supernatural creatures by day, known to fend off evil spirits and other harmful creatures. Gargoyles look like stone during the day, but by night they come alive and they play. They are a little comical and they just want to clean off the bird poop of the day and relax, have some fun and socialize. I love this book. It’s a great book to have for Halloween or just a spooky gathering of some kind. urn:oclc:35207746 Scandate 20110222215627 Scanner scribe6.sanfrancisco.archive.org Scanningcenter sanfrancisco Worldcat (source edition)

Gargoyle’s functionality as a waterspout declined over the years; hence, the rise of the grotesques – just plain sculptures of monkeys, devils, dragons, lions, or any other creature. Open mouth. As waterspouts, their mouths are wide open and their tongues are showing. This is believed to be a symbol of devouring giants, a threatening gesture which reminds people that there are some forces larger than humans. Bunting went to school in Ireland and grew up with storytelling. In Ireland, “There used to be Shanachies… the shanachie was a storyteller who went from house to house telling his tales of ghosts and fairies, of old Irish heroes and battles still to be won. Maybe I’m a bit of a Shanchie myself, telling stories to anyone who will listen.” This storytelling began as an inspiration for Bunting and continues with her work. So begins the poetic narrative of this striking picture book from author Eve Bunting and illustrator David Wiesner. Leaving their stiff daytime positions, the gargoyles peek into the museum they guard, cavort in a nearby fountain, and frighten the night watchman, before returning to their accustomed places as dawn approaches... Following the success of last weeks virtual classes, we have scheduled a class for every day at 3:05pm! The oldest waterspouts were lion heads, found in Egypt and believed to be from the Fifth Dynasty in 2400 B.C. Same design for waterspouts were also recovered from the ancient Greeks and Romans.
